Also, if things weren't going good for a particular wrestler, back then, Vince liked it if that wrestler got in his face alittle bit and aired their grievances with Vince to his face, rather than just go behind his back and bitch about it. Shawn did that, too. Shawn also went to Vince with some of his ideas, which guys like Bret never did. Overcoming WCW, Shawn made part of his mission, too. Some of the other guys didn't care that much, as long as they were making their money. Shawn was a prick, but he cared, and wanted the WWF to make it and beat WCW, which they did.
It was actually, Shawn with DX & Playgirl, that helped WWE adopted a more gritty form of TV.

I know he wasn't the only one playing an edgy character on TV. There were a number of edgy characters in the WWF back then. Whether it be Austin, Golddust (who debuted in late '95), Rock in late '97, Bret (even though he didn't agree with the direction they were going). But he was the one behind the scenes who was suggesting to Vince to go in that direction. And before they left, Nash and Hall were, too.

My one regret is not watching enough television.

Always heard Vince had a man crush on HBK. Creepy.

"Imagine the worst situation - we lose Fabregas and Nasri. You cannot convince people you are ambitious after that. You cannot pretend you are a big club. A big club holds onto its big players and gives a message out to all the other big clubs that they just cannot come in and take [players] away from you." - Arsene Wenger

Its the same as what Cena is doing, he was the biggest star so he just made Vince book him to be the best.

Except unlike Cena, HBK was a phenomenally talented wrestler and deserved everything he got. Besides, based on what's going on right now in the WWE, I'd rather have HBK running the show anyday over these clowns.
