Default The Other Side: Bret Hart

A lot of Bret Hart thread goes around and this has nothing to do with his post retirement comments on other wrestlers, his biography or Montreal screwjob or Vince saying a whole franchise can be built around him glad that his competitors did not do it. Let us keep this within the ring between the bells (promos/mic work do not come in either).

What about Bret Hart the veteran wrestler who has a good list MOTY through his performances in the ring? How do you see him on the various aspects like psychology, move set, connection with crowd, storytelling, ability to make his opponents look good etc.? Was he the excellence of execution, the best there is, was and will be or did he have his share of flaws? Was he a boring formulaic wrestler or a master storyteller?

Bret brought a unique style of technical wrestling to the main event scene, a main event scene who had not seen a great technical wrestler since the Backlund days. He wasn't flashy in the ring he just went about his buisness in a no none sence manner. That's why I enjoy watching Hart matches so much because there is a realism to them. His facial expressions his methodical pace his ability to sell in a realistic manner. I've mentioned this before but Hart doing something as simple a pacing back and forth staring at his opponents made you feel like you were watching a championship fight everytime he was in the ring.. Plus Bret could work with everybody an get a good match out of every opponent he faced. He could work with bigs, Nash and Taker, technicians, Hennig, Owen, Benoit, Austin highflying quicker wrestlers like Michaels and lightweight like Hakushi.

Hes the greatest

He made it look and feel very real. bret hart was allways the favourite of people who do or understand martial arts/fighting etc.

i think this is exactly whats the difference between bret and many other wrestlers. He knows how to display wrestling as an martial art. in other peoples matches you often have these logical errors. for example If hulk hogan can do a big boot and legdrop out of nowhere why doesnt he start like that and finishes the match right away ? Bret hart is different, he gives you a logical reason how he defeats his opponent and wins the match.

the last promo i remembered from bret hart was when he told goldberg: "do you think you can just run over me like a thank, lets see what you can do against a real technical wrestler", and i was pretty hype about that. thats real logic like a boxing match, where you have distance fighter vs brawler or whatever and every match has a logical reason why it ends like it ends. bret alsways tried to deliver something like that and keep it real.

-Bret Hart has three ***** matches in my opinion

-Bret's matches on Raw were quite repetitive but on a PPV level,he was absolutely top notch.

-I am not Bret's biggest fan but there is no denying his execution of moves were perfect.

-The way he could reverse almost any move into the sharpshooter was a great delight to watch

Good wrestler.

But not one of the most notable wrestlers. Bret had far less historical matches then Shawn, for example. He's like Kurt Angle... But without the charisma.

Bret Hart is awesome, but i would give excellence of execution to Dean Malenko.

Bret was among the all time best in terms of telling a story and in ring psychology. Seems most of his critics never watched him in his prime. He has more four and five star matches than probably anyone. He can make his opponent look like a million bucks, not to mention carried the company during it's darkest period. He may not be a huge draw, but he was the best draw of that period and made guys like HBK and Austin bigger stars. Easily one of the most respected wrestlers of all time.

I see some people on this forum always saying Bret was overrated but I never understood how. Bret Hart may actually be the most underrated wrestler in the history of the business.I consider Bret Hart the greatest technical wrestler of all time. His technical crispness is better than pretty much anyone ever. He spent years in mid card hell always putting on the best matches anyone has ever seen before he even held the WWF Championship. Bret became so popular that at one point he received more fan mail than Hulk Hogan. He also paved the way for smaller guys like Shawn Michaels to become world champions after the whole steroid scandal almost broke the WWF. I wish Bret Hart had been able to stick around during the Attitude era of the WWF to show how much of a benefit he was to the WWF in their post Hulkamania transition. Growing up, Bret Hart made me believe that being the WWF Champion was the greatest accomplishment any man could achieve.
