Default What if: Goldberg vs Austin in 1998

I was mad young back then but I still knew this was the most talked about "Dream" encounter at the time. Didn't Goldberg talk about it on Leno or something? Austin was lighting the world on fire and Goldberg's was basically a half a hair behind if not just as white hot as Austin during most of 1998, especially the summer. They both wore black trunks, they were both bald, and the reactions they garnered remain at the top of the biggest ovations/pops/reactions in wrestling history.

Who would you have go over if this interpromotional match actually happened?

Who would the crowd side with if it was neutral territory.

(yes Austin was/is more talented yadda yadda, just go with it)

Austin would win, he was the bigger star. The crowd would cheer for Austin louder, he was more popular.

The WWE crowd would boo the hell outta Goldberg in this match.

In fact, Rocky was the Heel when they fought and Goldberg was getting some boos in his debut match with the wwe against the Rock - who was getting cheered.

Imagine if it was face Austin instead of heel rock, and how much worse his pop would have been...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

NOW, lets spin this around. If Goldberg was still in WCW when he was white hot, and Austin came THERE to face him, I honestly believe the crowd would be behind Bill as the face of WCW... and let's face it. Those WCW fans were loyal as fuck and a huge reason why WCW did so well back then.

So yeah... i think it depends on which audience / fan base the match would have taken place in front of.

It'd end in a draw. A bald headed conspiracy!!

I would have backed Austin without a doubt and I'm sure most of the fans would too...

Would have been horrible on all ends. Austin would just embarrass him on the mic, the match wouldn't be anything special and I'm just not seeing a good build.

I would have loved to have seen Austin v NWO 96 but I can't see anything special between Austin and Goldberg.

Goldberg squashes Austin in 1998.

If it were an inter-promotional match, a true one, we'd be seeing something like when Bob Backlund fought Harley Race in a WWWF vs NWA title match and it'd end in a draw for sure. Probably like Diesel vs Bret at Royal Rumble '95.

As far as who would get cheered, I think Austin would have. There was much more pathos behind his character and Goldberg would have come across as the monster for the more human Austin to overcome.

Unsafe goldberg would have probably hurt austin with his neck problems and all.
