Re: What if: Goldberg vs Austin in 1998

I agree with Rock-Bottom it depends where the match took place. I know it is easy to say Austin and more than not he would be cheered, but I also believe the whole war had fans choosing sides. It was VERY apparent online after RAW/Nitro went off the air and how people use to compare ratings(where the whole phenomena began that is still done today, but to a much lesser extent obviously).

If some think this is mistaken all you got to do is see how Hall and Nash came off as heels in wcw although there were scants of cheers and Razor and Diesel chants. Then add Hogan who threw it in wcw's faces he came from up north which created the whole boom.

Austin vs. Goldberg in 1998 down south might have been VERY interesting, but Goldberg would get booed out the building up North no doubt. Austin would have a better chance of getting cheered in enemy turf especially since he CAME from wcw to begin with. He could have been seen as a traitor as some fans saw Hogan as a traitor jumping to wcw.

Would have been a HUGE spectacle to say the least.

My one regret is not watching enough television.

I think Austin would still have the advantage. He's from the South and his fans still outnumber Goldbergs. Now if the match was in Atlanta? Maybe that would be different but who knows.

Austin would've won, but on a kayfabe level, Goldberg would've destroyed him.

I always wonder how great it would've been if WWE bought out Goldberg's contract just in time for Wrestlemania 19 to turn heel alongside Austin.

Re: What if: Goldberg vs Austin in 1998

The new nWo Corporation led by the reunited Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon would've came down to the ring and destroyed both of them, brotherrr.

No but seriously for Austin to have won you would've needed that WrestleMania X-7 finish where he beats the shit out of The Rock with a chair. Even then, Goldberg lost his first match by getting tasered, so maybe you would've needed something even worse than chairshots.

As far as neutral territory, somewhere in California I guess. Stone Cold would get the louder pop I would think.

Goldberg would have won via unsafe kick to the head.

After-match promo would've been something like
"Goldberg 3:16 says I just mule-kicked your ass into retirement"

Re: What if: Goldberg vs Austin in 1998

1998 would of been the perfect year for Austin vs Goldberg and alot of people were salivating about that possibility back then. 1999'onwards I don't think it would of had the same mystique with the streak being broken. As for would of won, it would of been a draw in 1998 with a lot of outside interference but the crowd would of been absolutely crazy, amazing atmosphere and depending on where it was held the crowd split would be pro Austin but only just.

Re: What if: Goldberg vs Austin in 1998

Austin would have wrecked Goldberg on the mic no matter where they were, however obviously where they were wrestling would decide who went over. Austin was the bigger star though, so if it was somehow neutral, Austin would go over.
