Nothing.

He deserved to be screwed, and the Kliq are the best!

By the way, Bret had his own Kliq (With Jarrett, Owen, Bulldog and Hakushi). Taker has his own as well (With Kama, Dibiase, The Godwinns, Savio, Rikishi and Yoko).

But THE Kliq was the best, because it just had the most stars.

Nothing really. It wasn't really the Kliq that screwed Bret. The Kliq couldn't hurt him. He drew more than all of them, he and Vince were close and Vince always had Bret as his go to guy when his championship experiments failed.

Bret could have let his contract expire and not sign that BS Vince offered, he could have done the job though I don't blame him for not wanting to, or he could have asked that he drop it sooner to a transition champ.

Its Vince's fault. Why did he let Bret negotiate with Bischoff while he had the title? As great as Bret's '96 and '97 run was Vince shouldn't have put the title on him if he was letting him leave.

Bret was asked to join and be the leader of the kliq by big daddy cool and HBK. He just didn't want to be a part of their politicking. He could've joined his brother owen and taker in BSK but i guess he's just a stand up guy.

Bret wouldn't have been able to waltz into WCW with the WWF title.

Security wouldn't have let him out the building with the title.

The only reason Madusa pulled it off is because nobody cared about the women's title.

Oh, did I hurt you, Bret monkey?

I wouldn't criticize Bret if people here wouldn't open threads about this pompous, arrogant, bitter human being.

By the way, to the user Alden Heathcliffe... You've green repped me... Too bad.

Nah.

If Bret was actually so popular and so much of a draw (And even if he wasn't and he was just better then Michaels)- Then why Vince choose Michaels? Because he knew Michaels is better.

If Bret was so good, then why did Vince gave up on him after 1996?

Hogan and Austin couldn't be buried for a reason- They made money.

Bret didn't. So he was easy to be buried.

He just didn't fit the Attitude. He hated it. Therefore, Vince gave up on him.

And also, if Bret actually decided to not sue Vince because he wanted to keep kayfabe, then he's very very stupid.

This interview with Bam Bam Bigeolow is very enlightening, in terms of how mean-spirited and odious the Kliq was. Bam doesn't seem bitter at all, and is just telling it how it was:

This is why it makes me laugh when HHH marks say that HHH didn't need Steph to be over. Um yeah, because politicking and ass-kissing had already put him over. He would have never been in the position he was without that, forget Steph. He was in because of Shawn. The fact that he was even in a position to be able to call shots about Montreal, says it all. A random mid-carder finagled his way into that position. I give him credit, because it's a dog eat dog world, but let's not rewrite history, and pretend that his positioning was due to anything more than swiftly kissing the right asses.

But that's a conversation for another time.

As for The Undertaker, I always got the impression he was more Team Bret, than Team Shawn. Shawn himself admits that the Undertaker didn't really like him back then, and I always assumed that he was one of the ones that Bret had firmly on his side. However, Vince talked it over with Taker and made nice, so that's that.

There's nothing Bret could have done to combat the Kliq, really. Anyone who's been in a work place environment and dealt with that type of thing, knows that. When your boss is all friendsy with a certain person, and even enamored with them, there's not much you can do.

Honestly, Vince sounded in love with Shawn at times. He certainly let him get away with far more than he would let others. He'd get that genuine giggle in his voice when talking about Shawn when commentating. When Sunny said Vince would let Shawn & her use his personal dressing room to have sex....that raised so many red flags to me that require so much psychoanalyzing of Vince that I just don't have the time for.

Having said that, Shawn is talented as hell; easily one of the best ever. Incredibly engaging too. So none of this is about Shawn, really. I believe that he would have been extremely successful regardless of who was in charge. I just think that Vince had his nose up his butt, and I can see why the Kliq running around controlling everything, would enrage people.
