How popular Was Roddy Piper during the Hogan era?

I'm only 21 and wasn't around for that time and was wondering how popular he was during that era. He main evented the first Mania. Was he #2 behind Hogan for a while or was Savage ahead of him. Also how popular was he as a face? I also heard He was never pinned until Bret Hart at Mania 8.

Well for starters he was a heel for the first 2 Manias. And he was insanely over, one of the GOAT heels, in short.

And when he went face, he was massively over as one, just a notch down from a heel though. Either way he'd put the roster to shame in overness now minus Rock/Taker and maybe Cena.

As a heel I'd say he drew as much heat as anyone else ever has done especially in between 1985 and 1986. As a babyface I'd say he was only below Hulk Hogan but as popular as Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior but by leaving wrestling as he did pretty much from 1987 onwards outside of brief spells people couldn't see his popularity.

Other posters have been spot on. Piper was put in a really good position, but he had the talent to take advantage of it. His run leading up to WM 1 and after is one of the single greatest heel runs in history.

AS a face he was probably never lower then 3 or 4 on the face depth chart, as far as position. However during that era the WWF was still running two seperate crews all over the country. His feud with Adonis was the main event on many of the WWF B shows.

Really fucking popular.

The Unofficial WWE Championship

The Unofficial WWE Championship is unknowingly held and defended at house shows, Monday Night Raw, Smackdown and Pay-Per-Views. When a champion is crowned, he defends his title every single time he competes in a singles match. If he is defeated via any decision a new champion is crowned and the trend continues.

Glass bottles breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing that Piper retired at least.

One of the best who ever did. The best ACTOR the WWE ever produced. Starred in Carpenter's film THEY LIVE which in my opinion is the best movie a WWE star has ever starred in besides maybe Princess Bride which Giant didn't carry like Piper did They Live.
