Re: How come WCW never hosted a show at Madison Square Garden?
Regarding WCW's show at the MSG complex, it was said to be a disaster.
-The second bout was said to be a hot match between Ron Simmons and Chris Benoit that was strangely stopped, with the explanation being that after 2 minutes, both men violated WCW rules and the match would be stopped and ruled as never taking place.
-It was announced that Flair would miss the show due to flight problems, which sparked "We Want Flair" and "We Want A Refund" chants that lingered for the remainder of the show.
-From most reports, no match was above three stars.
-Many of the babyfaces were heavily booed, especially Van Hammer and Marcus Bagwell.
-It was a 4,500 seat venue that saw WCW only sell about 2,900 but 3,500 including comps, drawing a gate of $47,000 which was high for a WCW house show but wasn't considered successful, as WCW saw a significant drop in the NY market in the years prior.
As far was WCW's NY history, I know they held an early PPV in Long Island, which I believe was the same day as WWE's Royal Rumble on free TV and would run Nitro there several times over the years.
