Default Macho Man in 1988/1989

So I was watching the best of Saturday Night's Main Event on Dvd last night. The 3 disc set starts off with a couple Hogan old school matches pre 1987 with guys like Piper, Harley Race etc. I decided to watch the Macho Man vs Honky Tonk Man match that actually started the Mega Powers. It was so dang fun watching Macho Man as a face in 1987. I always kinda thought that Macho pre 1991 was basically a heel other than his work with the Mega Powers, but the crowd was very behind him here BEFORE Hogan came to his aid. After Hogan made it to the ring the place almost exploded. Was Macho normally a heel before this match and just happened to have the crowd behind him because he was facing Honky Tonk?

After Wrestlemania IV, how many title defenses did Macho Man have on TV? I know he spent most of his time in tag team action with Hogan, but there HAS to be some Macho Man solo matches while he was champion. Just love watching good guy Macho Man from this era.

And by the way the Best of SNME 3 disc dvd kicks ass. Macho Man vs Honky Tonk and Macho vs Bret Hart are as good as it gets. The Honky Tonk, Bret Hart, Neidhart, Jimmy Hart stable was very entertaining. Macho vs Jake the Snake was a classic match. Jake the Snake vs Ricky the Dragon. Hart Foundation in a 3 fall match vs British Bulldogs. Macho vs Debiase, Brain Busters vs Rockers just a couple more great matches on this set.

Good question really.

He was obviously a heel in 87 when he lost to steamboat at mania 3 then went on to win the KOTR the same year and became The Macho King, in full heel mode.

He was then so over as a face in 88 when he went on to win the WWE Title tournament at Mania 4. With help from the spotlight hugger called Hulk Hogan.

This led to the Mega powers and then subsequent heel turn prior to Mania 5 where he faced Hogan in the main event, now 1989.

Aligning himself with 'Queen' Sherri was the4 pinnacle of his heeldom, imo. Mixed tag match at mania 6 with Dusty and sapphire was evidence of this.

Then at mania 7 came the emotionally charged Face turn, with the return of Miss Elizabeth. I wept as a child, still get chills, it was real to me damn it.

I LOVE MACHO MAN.

Right somewhere after Wrestlemania III, and before Wrestlemania IV, he turned face. Even before Hogan saved him in the Honky Tonk match, unless that match itself was the one that turned Macho face but I doubt that.

Dang I've got to check out the King of the Ring 1987. I didn't even know they had the King of the Ring before 1993.

Boy, people don't know history.

Savage turned face on Honky Tonk Man sometimes in the Summer of 1987, when he said that he was the greatest IC champ of all time, and not Honky.

He won the KOTR (Which was a house show event back then) as a face (He defeated Bundy in the finals). By Survivor Series he was a face.

And he became the Macho King by defeating Duggan in 1989.

I don't care if you know your history, you are an ass and no one wants to learn history from an ass. Id rather learn it wrong from a nice guy, than learn it right from a troll.

Sorry for giving you shit, but you deserve it.

Savage was traditionally a heel as the others have said. He and Jake Roberts would routinely receive cheers.

I have heard this rumor for years although it may be hogwash: Vince allowed them a rare televised heel vs heel match to see who would get the cheers and test a future face. The crowd sided with Roberts and Jake was turned face soon.

Savage was such a great heel, and I know people will think I am nuts but the WWF, in my opinion really ruined him. In the CWA and ICW he was just so freaking out of control, he was rage. He was charisma. He was at his best. Then he left for New York and he was different, still great but not the same, especially with Elizabeth, those wild eyes faded a little. As popular as the Mega Powers were it took more of the edge off. Then they saddled him with the King gimmick, and even worse he became a cartoon character in those just plain goofy cowboy hats.

Before they watered him down, he was wild, like a berzerker.

He was a great heel in 85 and 86 but he was beyond good in 83, 84

Yea I've got that Macho Man vs Roberts match on DVD. Pretty great. I would love to see Macho Man pre WWE but it is hard to get my hands on good quality footage of that.

He wasn't the Macho King nor a heel as he won the KOTR.
