Gorgeous George

How come nobody ever talks about the GOAT? The man was first @ everything, he was the first to have entrance, first cowardly heel, first wrestler to become mainstream popular. He was Muhammad Ali's biggest influence, and ali took alot from George. So why isn't he talked about like Bruno Sammartino? Ric Flair basically took his whole gimmick from Gorgeous George, the man was the biggest draw ever, use to draw all over the world. Even tho he never was a wwe superstar, he should be acknowledge for the greatness. The man is responsible for the way wrestles are today. Even though he is wrestler from the 40's people should give him credit!

Because Gorgeous George never held a major world title and no one on here saw him wrestle

Ric Flair's gimmick is nothing like Gorgeous George.

Gorgeous George was a fag who wore bobby pins and sprayed the ring with perfume.

Ric Flair is a ladies man who bragged about how great he was.

The only thing similiar was their robes and their hair color.

Re: Gorgeous George

If we want to talk about influence on the pro wrestling industry in the United States, then let's talk about Gorgeous George. Let's talk about how he was of of the biggest professional wrestling attractions during the mainstream breakthrough of television. Gorgeous George, a man who was probably 30 years ahead of his time, largely focused on the details of his wrestling persona. The hair, the robes, the elaborate entrances (cited by many as the first wrestler to use entrance music), and all the antics he would perform during his matches. George was arguably the first wrestling superstar and reportedly was once the highest paid athlete in the world. I have read stories about thousands of people paying to see him get beat. He wasn't the most hated heel ever but people literally bought into his performances because he was so entertaining with his act. George was a real pioneer for the presentation and character aspect of a wrestler. George was just a brilliant heel & character overall through and through based on the videos I've seen on him.

I agree 100%. In a league of his own when it comes to influence on the modern qualities of the business.

Re: Gorgeous George

I think the reason most people on this forum don't mention him is because they have only heard about him and not seen any of his work. I know I haven't.

For example, go in the GOAT thread and post the OP and 95% of the posters will discredit him completely, without even knowing anything about him and the other 5% will either ignore or change the subject because they don't know much about him.

IMO, he should get more mentions, simply because of the era he worked in, which was when wrestling had a more legitimate feel to it. But in these days, nobody calls anybody GOAT unless they've won the WWE Title countless times, main evented Wrestlemania or had a successful life outside of the business, which is totally unfair to guys in the old school who didn't have those same outlets.

Re: Gorgeous George

I was so glad to see someone finally creating a thread about one the of GOAT. This man was truly a pioneer in this industry. You watch his entrances, his personality, you see that alot of what he did can be seen in todays generation. I do think since he's a 40s wrestler that nobody knows who he is unless you study wrestling history. I find the same thing with Lou Thez. A true pioneer, but in todays generation, not many people know him. But Wow... I had no idea that Ali's greatest influence was George. Thats pretty cool.

Thought I would add a couple of pictures for the people who don't know who he is or what he looks like

Flair was nothing like Gorgeous George? Seriously?!?
George may have had a much more androgenous gimmick, but his over the top flamboyancy, the suits, the larger than life, richer than rich personality, the robes, the I'm better than you mentality, the bleached blonde hair were stolen by Buddy Rogers, then stolen by numerous other wrestlers, then stolen by Flair. Flair is my favorite of all time, but I can tell you he was influenced heavily by George Wagner. Maybe not directly, but the influence George had on the wrestling world can be easily seen in The Nature Boy Ric Flair. WOOOOOOOOOO!

BTW, I just bought the Gorgeous George biography this weekend and a DVD featuring him and Buddy Rogers. I can't wait to check them out!

Not only was he an influence on Ali, but Bob Dylan and James Brown are quoted that he has had a direct impact on both of their careers/personalities.

Re: Gorgeous George

Double G, the original pimp yo.

Unfortunately through researching him, he was just a bit off from Buddy Rogers career since he died young. Would've died to see the two just promo once together or against.

I made an entire rant on the man because he is a fucking God and 99% of the people who post here think of the stupid bimbo instead of the LEGEND.

If you check out profiles, I am probably the only person here who has him listed under favorite wrestlers. I use his name as my username in a few wrestling forums I haven't been to in years.

That's because, like Gorgeous George himself, I am fucking GOAT
