Re: Gorgeous George

I'm more of a Buddy Rogers guy (the original promo man, heel and foundation of Northern WWE style wrestling) but Gorgeous George's importance is huge

Guy broke so much ground they might as well have named the path behind him a quarry

If you check out profiles, I am probably the only person here who has him listed under favorite wrestlers. I use his name as my username in a few wrestling forums I haven't been to in years.

That's because, like Gorgeous George himself, I am fucking GOAT

Re: Gorgeous George

I wrote this on the GOAT discussion thread 2 weeks ago, but people who regularly post on the GOAT thread are generally idiots.

Making a Case for:

Gorgeous George.

Now many of you morons won't know anything about wrestling before the attitude era, but do not fear, I am here to save you from ignorance.

Wrestling's first true 'boom' period was in the late 1940's through the 1950's. The man responsible for this was Gorgeous George. In that time Gorgeous George became a mainstream star and pop culture icon.

Gorgeous George was credited with more sales of tv throughout that era than anybody else, in fact he is often credited as making television a valid source of entertainment. In the 1950's Gorgeous George was so huge that he commanded 50% of the gate; he earned over $100,000 a year, making him the highest paid athlete in the world. Millions tuned in to watch him on tv and thousands upon thousands came to see Gorgeous George in action.

Gorgeous George developed showmanship in wrestling, think of all the greats who have had tremendous showmanship, it was originated by Gorgeous George. Cheating heels, started with Gorgeous George, where do you think guys like Buddy Rogers, Ric Flair, Jesse Ventura or almost any modern day heel, par a heel type like Triple H or Harley Race got there act from? Gorgeous George is the answer.
Entrance music is something every wrestler in the WWE has now, who was the first? Gorgeous George, who came down to the ring with 'Pomp and Circumstance', later adopted by the late great Randy Savage. His entrance was a spectacle, which had the same power as someone like The Undertaker. In his entrance he was accompanied by 'Jeffries', one who was once played by the most famous comedian of the time, Bob Hope. The 'Jeffries' would spray the ring with Chanel No. 5 perfume, then as the referee would try to pat him down to check for illegal objects, he would exclaim "Get your filthy hands off me!", then the referee would be sprayed with the perfume.
He was also the originator for a gimmick object to have, for example The Fabulous Kangaroo's boomerang or Bret Hart's sunglasses. Gorgeous George threw 'Georgie pins' to the crowd.

Not only did he influence wrestling, but the likes of Muhammad Ali, Bob Dylan and James Brown attribute much of their success to Gorgeous George. Muhammad Ali met George after George had a bout with Freddie Blassie which had 15,000 attendance, after the match Ali met George and George told Ali, "A lot of people will pay to see someone shut your mouth. So keep on bragging, keep on sassing and always be outrageous". The next night Ali, known as Cassius Clay drew 500 people attendance, so he created the character of Cassius Clay "The Greatest", his famous trash talking, was ultimately because of Gorgeous George. Gorgeous George was made into a character by Warner Brothers, known as Ravishing Ronald and movies have been made based on his career.

Gorgeous George was really the first true cross-over mainstream star from wrestling, along with his long list of accolades he is truly one of the greatest, if not the greatest of all time.

Taking what was written in wiki and slightly changing some things doesn't mean you fucking wrote it, you just copied it and did a few minor changes to try to make it your own.

Try the fuck again.

Considering I wasn't alive in the 1940's/50's and there aren't that many sources for Gorgeous George I tried to put something together with a few sources and then add my own evaluation to it. It is called presenting an opinion then using evidence to back it up. That is generally what happens when you are arguing for something.

If you want to do something better, go ahead, but I don't see anyone else trying, so next time think before you type.

I did try something better. I posted it earlier in the thread.

I am not saying there is a problem taking sources but to try to act like you sat there and fucking took effort to actually put your own presentation together is laughable. You basically copy and pasted wiki and tried to act like you were some know it all when you just stole it, almost word for word.

Fail.

Re: Gorgeous George

i read his book years ago, so i'm not sleeping. there isn't a lot of footage of him on youtube, and noone here actually saw him wrestle, so there isn't a lot to talk about, but the guy was obviously a pioneer.
