Up until the end of Starrcade 97 was Sting vs Hogan/NWO the best Storyline ever?

Sting vs Hulk Hogan/NWO might have been the best storyline of all time IMO. Only Austin vs McMahon rivals it (many here would say it's better but just stating my opinion).

Over a year buildup - Sting goin Crow, leaving in September 1996 not wrestling until December 97. During this time he was probably the most badass wrestler ever. He was over as hell showing up through the crowd, garnering monstrous reactions. Sting during this time was the most over man in wrestling bar none, and I'd say during this stretch he was one of the most over faces in history. Look it up if you don't believe it.

Hogan/NWO reign of dominance - Hogan being a great heel and holding on to that damn belt for basically over a year (sans a one week Luger reign). He acted scared against Sting. WCW needed a hero to stop the ultimate Villain and that was the NWO.

During this time the WWE was getting destroyed in ratings and almost had to close up shop. WCW was KILLING it during this time. WWE was FORCED to have it's A game and thus produced one of if not its best year ever in 1997.

Knockout punch was ready to be delivered when Starrcade 97 produced WCW's biggest buyrate and one of the most hyped matches of all time....

and they blew it and made a character they built for over a year as regaining his throne, to looking like he shouldn't have beaten Hogan.

The fact that Sting was the most popular wrestler around for over a year without wrestling and talking, nothing but action, and the great NWO heel faction dominating makes this one of the most well executed storylines in History IMO. Unfortunately the payoff couldn't seal the deal.

Thoughts?

Are you fucking insane? How can this be the greatest feud when the blowoff matches were absolute rubbish?

Mega Powers Explode
Flair v Savage "She was mine before she was yours"
Savage vs Jake the Snake is and was the definition of a great blood feud
Hart Foundation vs Stone Cold

Were all better than Old man Hogan stumbling around the ring and that's just off the top of my head.

any of Takers feuds, especially during the Ministry of Darkness story arc are my favorite.

The best? I would have to say that its at least a possible candidate (not my personal pick, but I can understand why some might choose it). Unfortunately, for all of the excellent hype they had leading up to Starrcade, the match itself was just total garbage and really was anticlimactic. Great stuff and right at the end, fizzle.

And then just over 15 years later, for some idiotic reason, we got the same type of finish in another main event, Rock vs Punk. You'd think that the WWE bookers would have realized that it was a bad finish 15 years ago, which would mean its STILL bad now. Why they decided to go that route is beyond me.

I wouldn't call it the best storyline ever because, IMO, it should have led to the breakup of the NWO. The match should have had bigger ramifications and when you think about it, there was no real pay off. It lead to NWO getting the title back 4 months later and Sting joining a different faction of NWO, which kind of made everything from September 1996 to April 1998 seem a bit of a waste.

I'd say Austin/McMahon was better, as it stretched nearly 4 years and led to Austin aligning with the devil himself. There was a real pay off.

While some may not agree, I feel Raven/Dreamer was a better storyline because it had a real pay off and that was after 2 years of grueling battles, Dreamer not only ended up with the girl but he also finally defeated Raven, which led to another storyline. As for the actual Raven/Dreamer storyline, there was a real pay off.

With Sting/Hogan, all concept of a pay off got lost due to the bullshit at Starrcade 1997 and the fact that Hogan went right back to being what he was before that match. Had Sting won the title cleanly and it led to the NWO dissolving, I would call it the best storyline ever but that would have prevented the rise of Goldberg.

So, I don't think it was the best.

I definitly think its up there...top 10, maybe even top 6-7...Starcade 97 brings it down instead of top 3 where it could have been...

Mega-powers expload is my favorite though....i watched wrestlemania 5 a ton of times as a kid

Great storyline. WCW was still dominating WWF even as the seeds were planted for the epic Stone Cold and Vince storyline.

It was nigh-on perfectly built up until the bullshit match of course, plus they 'stripped' Sting of the title the next night on Nitro i think lol.
