It was nigh-on perfectly built up until the bullshit match of course, plus they 'stripped' Sting of the title the next night on Nitro i think lol.
For some reason this is for me even worse than the Starrcade finish. It was a lame, controversial finish but if they did it right in the weeks after the PPV they could benefit from it like for example WWE with the Montreal Screwjob. It was not the ending everybody wanted, in fact it was terrible, but if they continued the next weeks with creative writing it would make the Starrcade match even more infamous and memorable what would lead to a final grdge match but with Sting stripped of the title they just ignored the 1 year build up

Wrestling moves so much quicker now than even 15 years ago, so pacing was what really helped that storyline. Now, Unless they were holding out for Mania, Sting would've been wrestling again with in 3 months... tops.
