Been there, done that, and got the T-shirt, son, and you're just doing reruns.

Default Brian Pillman in WCW

Something that has bothered me was Pillman breaking kayfabe in his match with Kevin Sullivan.

The angle was ahead of it's time but it benefited WCW in no way, shape or form because Pillman left.

So, what was the plan? Did they believe Pillman was going to stay? Was the angle done to set up a return after he spent time in ECW? Was it just another example of bad booking by Sullivan? Or was it an actual shoot/Pillman going crazy?

I never quite understood it either, but from what I can remember from shoot interviews is that Pillman had come up with this Loose Cannon gimmick and Bischoff liked it. At the same time though Pillman wanted out of the company, he wanted to go to the WWF, he hated WCW's environment and knew he was never going to be pushed anyway. So he came up with this idea to be "fired" by WCW with Bischoff, then show up on ECW, shoot on Bischoff and WCW (which he did), stir some shit up there and then eventually return to WCW as a hot commodity, as a true loose cannon. The problem is Pillman basically said fuck it, you released me, I'm free now. So he went to the WWF.

It was a really different idea but the execution was way off.

I think Bischoff and company thought Pillman would refine the character in ECW and return to WCW. I'd like to think there was a plan to have some sort of finality to the angle with Sullivan then have Pillman as the loose cannon within WCW. I don't know if WCW was just naive enough to think that Pillman was going to return after his release but I assume that's it.

I do think the whole thing was booked and not a shoot by Pillman.
