It's a cheap way of getting people to talk, shock value is the easiest thing to write. Russo had his moments, but anyone could have written that bullshit in to rile up people. "Oh, let's lynch the fucker." Yeah, creative. More like low brow and even offensive to some people.

The whole WWE during the time when WCW was a threat was about getting people to talk and the numbers prove that it was the right way. Also it's not about what you write, it's about when you did it and Russo did it at the right time, he knew what wrestling fans and the whole USA wanted.

It was not a pointless segment like for example the Heyman & Punk heart attack promo. I defended that promo weeks ago but today I call it a pointless segment. Why? Because it happened and nothing changed, same PG crap, same childish characters like Brodus Clay, Santino Marella and Hornswoggle. But the 1999 segment happened during the time when The Rock tried to kill Austin by throwing him off a bridge, when Ken Shamrock wanted to end Undertaker's career because of his sister, when prostitution, drugs and racism was a topic in storylines so it suited very well.

But if you call that bullshit that anybody can write and low brow then I ask why the hell did you watch WWE during that time? You comment in this thread so you obviously watched WWE during that (very successful and popular) time.
Or are you one of these fans who watched Attitude Era 10-15 years later on YouTube?

Would have been a great storyline to get rid of the Bossman (or even used on someone else) and also make Undertakers character EVEN more believable.

It went too far. When you hang a guy in the middle of your biggest show of the year for no real reason, you know you've gone too far

It was unneeded in every way imaginable. The sheer fact it didnt lead to anything proves that. It was just escalation of the increasingly dark and absurd road they were on. Atleast the crucifixion actually helped sell the Taker/Austin feud and the power of the ministry, not to mention it was nowhere near as horrific

It was complete and utter dead silence. A man was just hung in the ring. Thank God the main event was the two biggest stars on the planet otherwise the show would have stayed dead

Like I said in another topic, no one even gave a fuck it happened; the commentators were talking about the next match, no one was coming out to help the Big Boss Man, etc. The whole angle didn't make any sense whatsoever. I'm all for crash tv, and shocking moments, but like Redead said, have a reason for it.

It went too far? What is worse, when someone is killed and you know it's planned (because no police, they continued with the show without breaking kayfabe etc.) or these wrestling moments when they acted like someone is really injured with EMTs and officials rushing like someone is really injured or unconscious? Shawn Michaels collapsing in a match against Owen Hart 1996, Ric Flair heart attack on Nitro 1998, Vince McMahon Million Dollar Mania accident or the Jeff Hardy pyro accident are the best examples, those things are more shocking or distasteful.

I don't know, if I watch a scripted show where I know there will be scripted fights, injuries, turns and knockouts why not having a scripted death? Yes it was unusual but we all know it's entertainment and when we have deaths in movies, TV shows and music videos why not having a similar segment in sports entertainment?

Then you forgot what happened weeks later. It was revealed that the Corporation and the Ministry of Darkness worked together so that was the reason why nobody helped Boss Man and the reason why the commentators didn't mentioned Bossman and his condition anymore is because it should look weird why nobody mentioned it anymore.
Ministry visiting McMahons house, Vince vs Shane, faceturn of Vince, it was all a big plan from Vince, Shane and these 2 stables to fool Linda & Stephanie, Austin and the fans.
Maybe the Bossman death was a fake segment in a fake sport type? Vince, Taker and Bossman fooled all kayfabe-wise to make it look like a Ministry member killed a Corporation member

I watched every show as it happened on tv. But you're right, Russo is a genius. Must be why he made WCW so much more successful and is currently the reason for TNAs boom period.

Oh wait...that never happened. He helped kill one and isn't really doing the other one any favors.

I really dont know how to respond to that. First of all you cant compare movies to wrestling, so dont even bother even pretending it is

Shawn collapsing..... I dont think that should have happened. Someone injuring him? Maybe. But him just dropping to the ground? Yeah, I didnt like that. Whenever I see it, it reminds me of what happened to Fabrice Muamba. And the less said about Flair's heart attack the better

the hanging is most problematic because of the imagery. Nobody wants to see that. There is a reason they banned public executions and hangings in England as early as the time of Charles Dickens, and there is a reason they dont show it on TV or that many movies, at least not vividly. Its a dark thing, especially when someone isnt aware its a work

It went nowhere, the crowd hated it, and the company ignored it. The only purpose it served was telling Vince he'd gone too far. Little surprise the following years were all toned back from the craziness of the previous years

Yeah, let's talk about things that are irrelevant to this topic because you have no arguments.
There was never a segment with Foley that drew a 8.4 in TNA, that means he was never part of a WWE segment that had the biggest rating. When Bischoff arrived in TNA and the Monday Night Wars 2.0 started TNA failed, that means he was never responsible for the WCWs success in the nineties. Nobody also gave a fuck about Hall, Nash, Hogan and Waltman during that time in TNA, that is the best argument that nWo didn't mean shit during the original Monday Night Wars right?
And with the smiley at the end of your post I doubt that you was even born then. It was a pleasure to discuss with another fan who uses YouTube top comments as his argument.

I'm 32, and nothing says poor argument like saying I am a kid. Because no grown man would hate Russo right? What a fuckin' joke. Russo was a one trick pony and the company got bigger and bigger after Russo left, proving that they didn't need him.
