Thoughts On Rock Returning?

Posted this in the Classic Wrestling forum as it is mainly based on perception from the AE. What are your thoughts on Rock appearing in WWE now and again while it's in its current state? Has he ruined his legacy? Has it changed your perception of him? Does he look suited to it still? Should they have altered his character?

IMO although I always watch his returns and matches because its quite simply The Rock, I don't enjoy seeing him returning with shocking wrestlers that can't do promos, lack charisma and quite literally look like an average guy. Although hes not old and can still wrestle he just doesn't seem to me like Rock anymore and its not believable.

Its more about Dwayne Johnson wrestling than The Rock because he's now known as a movie star, especially to the kids which it is now catered for. He was always going to return to the profession that helped him get to movies and he didn't leave on bad terms with Vince; but I can't help but think its stupid having him say his catchphrases which the youth can't relate to.

Although Rock was the main man during 99 onwards, it seems to me that he was known for being the 'underdog'. Yes he won the title but he was so much of a babyface he got screwed constantly for storylines sake. Add him putting Goldberg and Lesnar over and Triple H and Stone Cold the draw to the Rock was always he could win the title, not him actually having it. Now, he is absolutely massive and should have been moulded a little IMO.

I'm not old enough to know about Hogan doing the similar at Invasion; obviously after he'd been wrestling (so a little different) but is this similar? Imagine Stone Cold coming back it just wouldn't work.

Re: Thoughts On Rock Returning?

The Rock returning is one of the best things to happen in WWE in a long time. I honestly don't see how it has destroyed his legacy.

Top 5
CM Punk
The Undertaker
Stone Cold/Triple H (Tied)
Edge
Chris Jericho
Current Top 5
Dean Ambrose
Brock Lesnar
Bray Wyatt
Daniel Bryan
Cesaro

Re: Thoughts On Rock Returning?

The Rock came back for one thing and one thing only, to help out the company that made him AND sell some extra movie tickets.

If just 10% of the current audience goes and checks out his latest flicks, then its a win/win, and honestly more than 10% of the audience is going to do just that.

It's called synergy, and yes its a corporate term.

Re: Thoughts On Rock Returning?

It's a win for everybody involved. Rock gets his last run, WWE gains from his appearances and he puts over anybody he's involved with to the next level.

Of course it's a positive. It's just hard to see it that way with all the pessimistic people on the internet.

Re: Thoughts On Rock Returning?

I think it's great. WWE gets a lot of business, Rocky gives back to the industry that made him what he is today, and we get the opportunity to see Rock vs. Punk. He's not really in his prime anymore in terms of mic work, imo Punk's been outdoing him lately (although Punk has the luxury of throwing kayfabe out the window every time he he cuts a promo, which Rock doesn't do unless Cena is involved), but he's still a gawd on the mic. His delivery and ability to get the crowd hyped is untouchable by anyone else in the company atm.

The only downside I could see is if he monopolizes the title from now til Mania. I sincerely believe that The Rock is a top 5 talent, but he just doesn't need the title. Having him in the title scene does wonders for it's prestige, but he's much bigger than the championship at this point. If it was a feasible possibility for him to carry the title for a decent amount of time (6 months or so maybe), that'd be a different story though.

Talent/charisma draws. Not size.

Re: Thoughts On Rock Returning?

Im still waiting for him to "put someone over". Since hes come in, he helped stop the momentum of two red hot heels(Miz and R truth) and spent a year completely ridiculing wwe's top superstar just to beat him at Mania clean. Now hes putting Punk down over and over again and if he gets the victory, then thats another superstar that has bowed down to the Rock. And you know Cena and Punk have had to hold back on the microphone when it comes to talking about Rocky. Especially Cena. Why is it ok for Rock to constantly call guys bitches and the like but Cena and Punk cant stoop that low(which doesn't matter, there still outclassing him on the mic).

I love the Rock but I compare this run to Hogans in 2002. Yeah Hogan won the belt but look at all the guys he put over Rock,Angle,Taker,Brock,Edge and the list goes on. Rock coming back is fine, infact its awesome but I dont know if its him or the wwe writers or a combo of both but there making him bigger than the product and thats gonna hurt it in the long run. It might cause a short term rise of popularity but not in the long run.

The Rock had nothing to do with stopping Awesome Truth's momentum. Losing one tag team match doesn't do that, especially not to The Rock and John Cena. In fact, even being involved with those two boosted them up. What DID kill their momentum was turning Truth face and ruthlessly jobbing out Miz. That's on booking, not Rocky or Cena.

Of course he ridiculed Cena. It's a feud. That's what happens. And lol @ Cena and Punk being forced to hold back on the mic. They both regularly throw out kayfabe on a weekly basis. If anything, The Rock was the one that had to tone it down for Cena.

Rock is not getting the better of Punk time and time again. Don't you remember how Punk turned heel in the first place? By nearly kneeing The Rock's face off. Yeah, so Punk got Rock Bottom'd once. How is that anything even remotely close to a burial? Also, again, booking is what put Rocky over Punk and Cena. It hd nothing to do with Dwayne.

Well he's gonna put Cena over at WM, and hand him the title.
