Default AWA - CIRCA 1990 How would you have saved the AWA?

It's January 1, 1991, the AWA and Verne Gagne has given you full creative control of the AWA and a budget of $20 million. You still have your weekly 1 hour TV show on ESPN and ties with the USWA, CWA and All Japan.

Your core roster currently consists of Larry Zybzsko, Nikita Koloff, Tom Zenk, The Trooper (Patriot), Ken Patera, Brad Rheingans, Badd Company - Pat Tanaka & Paul Diamond, The Destruction Crew - Wayne Bloom and Mike Enos, Akio Sato, Kokina (Yokozuna), Sgt. Slaughter, DJ Peterson, John Nord (The Berzerker), Jerry Lynn, Curtis "Mr" Hughes, Greg Gagne, Col DeBeers, Wahoo McDaniel and Mr. Saito. How are you going to rebuild the AWA to a position where it would eventually compete with the WWF and WCW? Who will you add to your roster? What are your feuds? etc etc

Champions at time of take over:
World Heavyweight Champion: Larry Zybsko
World Tag Team Champions D.J. Peterson & The Trooper
Lightweight Champion - Buck Zumhofe

Additions:
Tully Blanchard
Ricky Steamboat
Kerry, Kevin, and Chris Von Erich
Nikita Kolloff
Scotty The Body Anthony (Raven)
Vic Steamboat (Ricky's little bro)
Dean Malenko
Cactas Jack
Terry Funk
The British Bruisers
Abdullah the Butcher
Iron Shiek
Sean Waltman

I would have hot shotted all the titles...

World Heavyweight Champion:
Larry Zybsko
Greg Gagne
Tully Blanchard

Giving Gange the title would pop. the Minnesota fans. However Gange's win would be short lived after Tully Blanchard put a bounty out on him and Kokina & Abdullah would collect, injuring him before his match w/ Tully Blanchard. Then after Kokina would break his leg.

World Tag Team Champions
D.J. Peterson & The Trooper
Kokina & Butcher

Butcher & Kokina would destroy DJ Peterson putting him out of action. Trooper would then switch to his Patriot gimmick and start teaming with Sgt. Slaughter.

Lightweight Champion
Buck Zumhofe
Chris Von Erich
Dean Malenko

CVE the kid can't wrestle... So what once again Kokina and Butcher destroy him, ending his wrestling career and starting a feud with Kokina & Butcher and Kerry & Kevin Von Erich.

Stables:
The Monster Factory
Cactas Jack
Abdullah the Butcher
Kokina

The Foundation
Tully Blanchard
Larry Zybszko
Dean Malenko
Scotty the Body
w/ Curtis Hughes as the Enforcer

WRESTLE ROCK 91
AWA World Title
Tully Blanchard (C) vs. Ricky Steamboat

Background: Vic Steamboat debuts in the AWA and is on a roll. Until the Foundation gets upset and take out Vic. Bringing Ricky to the AWA.

AWA Tag Team Titles

AWA Light Heavy Weight Championship
Dean Malenko (C) vs. Jerry Lynn

Number 1 Contender Match
Larry Zybsko vs. Nikita Kolloff

Sgt. Slaughter & The Patriot vs. Iron Shiek & Col Debeers

The Destruction Crew vs. Bad Company

Tom Zenk vs. Akiao Satio vs. Terry Funk

The British Bruisers vs. Mr. Hughes & Scotty the Body

Sean Waltman vs. John Nord

Verne let Hogan go in 1983 and wouldn't push him. But then again Verne still had that old vision, unlike Mcmahon.

Vern pushed the hell out of Hogan. Hogan chased Bockwinkel for the title and was the number #1 contendor for the rest of his tenure. Problem was Verne wanted a cut of Hogan's money from Wrestling in Japan.

I like the most of this especially putting the title on Tully. Since Tully's Dad was the NWA President at the Time. You could have went with a power struggle between President & Champ the Blanchards & The Gagne's.

I never understood why Verne never put the belt on Sgt. Slaughter during his GI Joe run. With the ESPN show coming on in the afternoon Verne should have been going after the kids.

Verne really should have pushed the hell out of Kokina, The Trooper, Nord, Norton, The Destruction Crew. I also think Tully & Nikita were working for the AWA in 1990.

With the Von Erich's on the card. Vern could have moved filming out the Sportatorium in Texas instead of that horrid hotel in Vegas. This probably would have helped a ton.

One thing I def. would have done if I was Verne is set up a meeting with the money men behind the GWF. Who had a ton of you talent: JBL, Bobby Duncam, Booker T, Stevie Ray, Cactas Jack, Raven, Jerry Lynn, Sean Waltman, Patriot, and Buff Bagwell.

They couldn't compete with the WWE, that ship had sailed at that point. They couldn't even compete with number two, the NWA. They might have been able to survive though with better booking, focusing on young talent and perhaps they should have differentiated themselves from other American promotions by using a lot of Japanese talent (e.g. push Liger).
