Default Re: AWA - CIRCA 1990 How would you have saved the AWA?

I know this is an older post but I was thinking about this subject and came across this post and loved it. At that time I think the free agents I would of went after would be Rick Rude, Paul Orndorff, Bob Backlund, Terry Gordy and Steve Williams. Acquiring them in addition to the set roster, the AWA would be pretty solid. I would start out the year by having Ricky Steamboat defeat Larry Z for the world title.

January-
World Champ- Ricky Steamboat(Face)
World Tag Champs- Terry Gordy and Steve Williams(monster heels)
National Champ- Tully Blanchard(Heel)
TV Champ- Tom Zenk(Face)
Commissioner- Verne Gagne

Faces- Von Erichs
Sgt. Slaughter
Patriot
Destruction Crew
Terry Funk
DJ Peterson
Wahoo McDaniel
Jerry Lynn
Brad Rheighens/Bob Backlund
Curtis Hughes
Nikita Koloff

Heels- Rick Rude
Paul Orndorff
Ken Patera
Cactus Jack
Kokina/Sato
Saito/Larry Z
Badd Company
Larry Z
Col. DeBeers
Abdulla the Butcher
Scotty the Body
John Nord
Iron Shiek

My First big pay per view would be WrestleRock 91 in June held at Texas Stadium.

World Title Bout- Ricky Steamboat vs Rick Rude
World Tag Title Steel Cage- Williams/Gordy vs Kevin and Kerry Von Erich
National Title- Tully Blanchard vs Terry Funk
TV Title- Tom Zenk vs Cactus Jack
Nikita Koloff vs Col Debeers
Destruction Crew vs Kokina/Sato
Sgt Slaughter vs Abdulla the Butcher- Street Fight
Larry Z/Mr. Saito vs Bob Backlund/Brad Rheighens
Badd Co. vs Jerry Lynn/DJ Peterson
Curtis Hughes vs John Nord
Patriot vs Ken Patera-NO DQ

Rick Rude would defeat Steamboat for the world title. I think Rude would draw well as champ so he's going to get a long run. The Von Erichs defeat Williams and Gordy in a brutal cage bout to win the titles with the Texas fans going nuts. In a huge shock a returning Greg Gagne interferes on behalf of Blanchard to help him retain the National title over Terry Funk. This would set up a huge storyline for the next 6 months with a mega heel Greg trying to unseat his father as commissioner. Greg and Tully would form an alliance. I think this story would draw a lot of fan interest. Tom Zenk retains against Cactus Jack. Zenk was very over with the AWA crowd so he gets a good tv title run. Nikita destroys DeBeers then Iron Shiek runs in and gets blasted by a Russian sickle. This sets up Nikita as a top contender. Destruction Crew win by DQ over Kokina and Sato as Kokina splashes Bloom through a table. Sgt Slaughter defeats Abdulla in a bloody street fight. Larry Z and Saito defeat Backlund and Rheighens setting them up for a summer series against new champs the Von Erichs. Badd Co defeats Lynn and Peterson in a fast paced action bout. John Nord goes over Hughes establishing him as a monster heel. Patriot defeats Patera in a heated bout. Paul Orndoff makes a surprise appearance saying he wants to teach these young punks a wrestling lesson and wants to start with TV champ Tom Zenk. I think this card would of set up a lot of interesting storylines as well as establishing some new stars and main event players. This would be the card that really sets the pace for the AWA.

I would have 2 major pay per views a year(WrestleRock in June and SuperClash in December) so they would have a really special big time feel to them. I would also run 2 special free TV super cards a year. I would run 4 house shows with one of those arenas used for a TV taping. I would also have another TV show taped specifically at the same arena each week. I'll be working on the next 6 months and build towards SuperClash 91.

Re-package Verne Gagne as Gerne Vagne and have him go on an undefeated streak, where he defeats the entire roster every week in separate matches. After 1 year, he will be 1000-0 and the AWA will be the greatest promotion of all time.

Get rid of Verne Gagne.

Get Zbyszko some decent challengers.

Work out some kind of deal with WCW.

Hope for the best.
