Default Creatively, would the WWF been better off if they didn't buy WCW?

I have been thinking that if WWF didn't buy WCW, they could have been more entertaining and given great main events. The only big thing that really came out of it was Rock/Hogan and maybe Flair with Evolution really. Everything else fell flat from the invasion to the nWo to even Goldberg. We may have got an Austin/Rock/ HHH match at WM 18. Or Rock vs Michaels perhaps or Lesnar vs Austin?

What do you guys think?

BTW this isn't a WCW hate thread by me, I was actually at the time a bigger WCW guy than WWF. This is just a bit of an observation due to the top WCW guys not coming later on etc.

I remember reading that WWE wanted to get WCW on another network after the purchase but no one would take them, thus they were left with no choice other than to dissolve the organisation and merge its roster.

That could be wrong as I have never seen it verified but it does get me thinking what could have happened if WCW did get on another network.

Vince acquired the video library which is probably all he wanted. The invasion just set back development of the wrestlers they already had and we could have epic matches like Austin/Rock/HHH at WM. I think creatively we could have had a great year as just about all the top talents were firing on all cylinders ( apart from Trips' injury )

It depends how the WCW would have gone about business when they were bought and that was dependant on who owned them. What would have been truly unbelievable was to get WCW and ECW running as they were, with a sort out of WCW of the egos and the paycheques.

That could have allowed Vince to offer wrestling fans different types of organisation as they were - a roster for wrestlers nearing the end of their careers (WCW), a roster for more hardcore and smaller events (ECW), whatever direction the WWE wanted to take and a mixture of all 3 that could have produced some of the what if matches which could have pitted Sting vs. The Undertaker etc.

I don't really think so.

I don't feel him buying WCW affected the booking in a bad way, it just gave them more to do. Also was responsible for the rise of Jericho.

Regarding WM 18, Hogan/Rock was a far bigger deal than Rock/Austin/HHH could have been, not to mention, it would have depushed Jericho, as I think he was the WWE talent that got the most benefit from the WCW buyout, as it allowed him to beat WWE's 2 biggest stars in the same night. Not to mention, the entire Invasion angle really allowed guys like Austin & Angle to heal up from injuries. Without the mixture of outside talent, I don't think WWE could have been better off in mid 2001 because as the year went on, Austin was banged up, Angle was banged up and HHH was out.

No, because WCW would have died anyway or at least a very small player in the market so they wouldn't have had competition. Now they have the library and they immediately acquired some good talent.

Technically, no. When WCW were going out of business Eric Bischoff had the chance to buy it but it was coming without the TV deal. Bischoff then said without the TV deal, WCW is worth nothing and walked away. Vince then swooped in, bought WCW and is now making that money back by using it's video library to make DVD's.

I think creatively they absolutely would have been better off. The booking has been lazy because ROH or TNA is no real competition. Some of the dream matches that took place with former WCW characters came across as rushed. Competition makes everyone better.

Yes the WWE would be better if they had real competition.
