I want to say shortly before Royal Rumble 1997, as Jerry Lawler interviewed him and asked if he was a "queer" and Goldust said no.

Right around that time, HHH had been making advances to Marlena, which saw Goldust get offended, implicating he wasn't how we thought he was.

Was Goldust supposed to be gay, but they copped out by adding Marlena and playing mind games to let the heat die down? I always wondered that.

Though I don't remember, I think Goldust's peak (character-wise) was before dropping the title to Ahmed Johson at KOTR 1996. After that he had a program with Marc Mero where the storyline was about his infatuation with Sable which never played out in front of the cameras. His character attributes were never reinforced by then as I remember. Then he wasn't in any major storyline hence the face turn late in the year mentioned above.

Actually, Marlena came when he was still doing the gay shit, probably for the first 6 months of her tenure, IIRC.

The feud with Mero is when he seemed less gay and by the end of the year, he wasn't really gay at all.

Dude gave mouth to mouth to Ahmed! Honestly, that's about when I stopped watching WWF and went full time WCW. No Bret, corny stripteasing HBK, Golddust....product was wild suspect. Shit was terrible.

Kind of off topic but I remember back in 1996, I was watching a episode of RAW on VHS and my brother walked in the room during HBK's entrance and he wasn't really into watching wrestling. Anyway, when he saw HBK "stripping", he joked on me for watching something so gay.

Back on topic somewhat, as a 9 year old kid, those debut vignettes from Goldust really terrified me.

I always thought Goldust rubbing, licking, and kissing guys was hilarious. The way he would crawl on the mat and lick his IC Title was just great. Such a unique character. Sad that by the time 1997 rolled around, they had killed it. The unique promos, the movie quotes, the bizarre actions. That was one of the greatest characters in wrestling history, regardless of how gay he acted.

That's the prime example of a guy given a shitty gimmick but making it work.

But, you right, by 1997, they completely killed it off, as by then, there was nothing, aside from his outfit, that made him stand out. I think that gimmick would have been VERY interesting in the AE, as WWE could really push the envelope with it.
