Been there, done that, and got the T-shirt, son, and you're just doing reruns.

The only thing I've wondered is if the original plan was for HBK/Bret at WM 13 to be for the title, where would that leave Austin for the event?

Honestly, HBK losing his smile seemed to work out for the better.

Austin was the beneficiary of HBK being a dick. Seems Austin benefitted from the Clique fucking up a lot huh?
Dude you nailed that one on the head.

They had several different people going after the title at that time. HBK, Sid, Vader, Taker, Bret, and Austin were all in the mix, I'm guessing they weren't sure exactly how everything was going to shake out. There were just too many around the situation to go with the typical "One man on his quest for the gold" standard storyline. It would've left several key players with nothing to do during the most important time of the year.

Going about it this way was different and they left their options open. The screwy finish kept everyone relevant and gave them all something to do. I'm sure Vince knew HBK was in no mood for jobbing, so he wrote himself several outs.

Was one of the best RTWM seasons I remember.

Gotta remember HBK gave up the title like a week or 2 after the rumble to a "knee injury" which many included Nash even said was really just him angry so he left..I'm assuming that caused a big issue with the initial plans for Austin to main event WM13..Cornette has said during 1997 Timeline was that long term title plans were messed up many times due to HBK every walking away or unwilling to drop the title so I'm assuming WWE were kinda of rattled at the time, because Bret only had a 1 day title reign as well. Seemed like a lot of panic and being rattled from so much spontaneous stuff

Yep. It would get trashed today for playing hot potato with the belt.

They had the 2 main events set (Bret-Austin and Sid/Taker) and had a Bret-Sid cage match just weeks before Mania to determine which would be for the title

You mean if HBK faced Bret? I think Austin vs Bulldog was the plan all along. It started at the December IYH with Austin injuring Bulldogs knee and costing him the match. The feud continued through the Rumble match.

I'm sure this was the original Mania 13 card:

HBK vs Bret
Taker vs Sid
Austin vs Bulldog
Rocky vs Owen
Mankind vs Vader
Goldust vs Triple H

Basically HBKs injury messed up the whole card (4 big matches)

How did HBK mess up the MAnkind vs Vader-match?

It was Foley who suggested to McMahon to wrestle Vader, but McMahon changed that to a tag team match instead

i'm still wondering why did stone cold win the 2001 rumble. He didn't need it. Kane should have won it. Since Rock was the man at the time

Maybe because the winner of the Royal Rumble is going to Wrestlemania? Or maybe you want Kane to loss his spot in some kind of a stupid way?

WHY CHANGING IT?! WHY?! What's good it will do to crap on the Rumble and to prevent from the winner to go to Wrestlemania?

Austin won it because that was what the fans wanted! Rock was the man, and Austin wanted to prove that Rock is not bigger then him. He needed to win the Rumble in order to do that, so...
