What Made WCW Great?

- The amount of stars they had in their roster - Goldberg, Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Macho Man, Goldberg, Scott Steiner, British Bulldog, Sting, Flair, DDP (although it did contribute to their downfall)

- WWF was becoming more entertainment and WCW was a collection of the previous 10 years of wrestling. It wasn't as commercial.

I don't understand your post.

I guess what made WCW different was, in it's infancy, it was different than WWE. The minute it tried to recreate what WWE was doing was when it went downhill.

WCW at the beginning was more about the sport and less about the entertainment. Eventually, people grew tired of the usual and the NWO was born. Eventually, people got tired of that and WCW didn't know what to do next. The promotion made for good TV; it's just that for the most part, those running the company didn't know what they were doing.

The theft of ECW's stars
The Theft of Paul Heymans Ideas
And the Shelling out of Cash to keep the Hogan Nash Hall click happy
Made WCW big

Then Bischoff and Russo had to use their own ideas
and the cash ran out
and when that ran out so did the hogan nash hall click
thus the end of WCW

call me a ECW mark if you want FUCK WCW!!! haha

What ideas did they steal from ECW that were successful? Biggest thing WCW did was the NWO, repackage Sting, push Goldberg and build a strong tag team division, not to mention a strong mid card LONG before ECW.

And for the record, the cash never ran out. Deep pockets Turner ran the show and said he didn't care about the money, as WCW did him well with his networks.

The end of WCW came when Turner lost his share, as if Time Warner had full control in 1996, they wanted to pull the plug then. The deck was stacked against WCW since 1996 and they were just waiting for Turner to lose his share to call it quits. Him spending money was what made things get better, as ratings/buyrates didn't drastically increase until Hogan, Nash, Hall, Savage and other big name talents came over. Had Hogan never came back and furthermore, had Hall & Nash not jumped ship, WCW would have died after 5 years because it was a money pit from day 1, until those guys came over.

I can't rep you anymore. Expect some the next chance it allows me to. You hit the nail on the head.

You missed 1 thing: The Cruiserweights.

You right, that was a big omission from my part.

Basically, WCW was the only company that you could see a division strictly devoted to the cruiserweights in the US. And before somebody says they stole Mysterio, Konnan, Psychosis, Juventud, Jericho, Benoit, Malenko & Guerrero, you've only named about 15-25% of the cruiserweight division. Further more, their cruiserweight/light heavyweight division really got praise due to Brian Pillman and Jushin Liger. They're the reason the division even existed but I guess we're supposed to go off revisionist history.

If people still can't see what made WCW so great/different from the rest, it's because you've never watched it or you let WWE tell the story of the history of WCW.

Re: What Made WCW Great?

For me what made WCW great was that

1. they were always trying to improve the tv-product. Bigger, fancier, louder...etc. It always looked and felt cooler than Raw.
2. Main event wrestling. I always felt with WCW that there was an important main event wrestling (not a promo) at the end of every Nitro..with WWF it wasn't the same thing.

kindofasmartguy 01-06-2013 03:45 PM

Nothing or they would still be in business. Nitro was the cool show for a while until there were no more stars to steal from Vince.

WCW wasnt great but it was great for business, competition will do that even if its poor.
