To put it succinctly: there was something for everybody. Entertainment, plus great wrestling. Over the top characters and realism. Well traveled experienced guys and new faces. They managed to put it all together at the same time. It was completely fresh from what WWF was doing at the time.

Vader
Flair
Sportier vibe
Sting
Hoga
nWo
Bischoff
Schiavone/Brain
Goldberg
Luchadors/Cruiserweights

But perhaps most importantly - the ability to shock and surprise. Remember, this was pre-internet (Mostly). With the money WCW had access to, and the fact that Nitro was live, anything was possible. Even beyond 1999 because by then they were getting desperate and likely to try buying out big names again.

They were something but cool but not seriously inappropriate so that everyone could watch. As some say PG is killing WWE, WCW 96-part of 98 was handling PG just fine with rare cursing and i can't even remember anyone ever bleeding.

The booking. Storylines were great, even mid-carder feuds were amazing. Which is lacking in WWE these days.

It was when NWO threw Mysterio at a wall "like a dart". That made WCW for me.
