Re: Kevin Nash Comments About Goldberg?

i agree with him on most of that stuff, but he either forgets an entire year due to bad memory or he's protecting himself

but i do think mankinds title win is way overrated, most likely due to wwe hyping it up on every dvd saying how it turned the tide, they act like foley himself won the monday night war that night

fact is wcw made lots of mistakes, starrcade 97 was botched, and in 98 they made several big mistakes all leading just to another one on jan 4 1999

not saying it wasn't a important night, just that it gets overblown, even if wcw was booked right that night, and foley's title win never happened things would of turned out the same

maybe wcw's ratings would of stayed afloat for a while longer, but thats about it

the fingerpoke was just one out of many mistakes they made, fans act like that night was the sole reason wcw lost

what about no build for hogan/goldberg
botching starrcade 97 and bret harts arrival
misusing younger talents
forcing to become more PG
russo not saving the day
the merger that ended the day, remember wcw was in the same boat before nitro, there ratings were not that bad compared to todays, and if bischoff got his tv deal and another turner guy they could of had another boom period

The Hall feud was set in motion before the finger poke at Starrcade. The Hall feud ended 13 days after the finger poke. Nash was held off until April. In between he feuds with Bam Bam who has nothing to do with the nWo. Then he goes against Sting after Nash and is "injured" until August. Meanwhile Hogan feuds with Ric Flair and then loses it to DDP and turns face and feuds with Nash.

You are right that constant changes hurt the booking. But in the early months after the finger poke there seemed to be very little booking of Goldberg vs. the nWo. They didn't seem to remember to have Goldberg Vs. the nWo again until December of 99.

Well you cant give the title to a guy who is leaving soon to do movies..Going into motion full fledged after he came back? That's a different story

Nash is real good at revisionist history, not that anyone takes him serious.

Re: Kevin Nash Comments About Goldberg?

I think a lot of people are forgetting that the storyline pretty much fell apart in the months following "The Fingerpoke Of Doom".

From January 4th until sometime in April, the angle was somewhat still alive but barely because Hogan fucked it up by turning face. Goldberg was feuding with Hall, Nash & Steiner in this period, along with smaller angles with Bam Bam & Bret Hart. But, the focus completely got lost at Uncensored with the double turn between Flair & Hogan.

In my opinion, Hogan fucked up the potential by wanting to turn face. It seems to me, he did it because he didn't want to job to Goldberg again. But if Nash indeed did book himself to end the streak, the shit that happened in the following months was out of his hands, due to injuries and Hogan's creative control.

I was about to say the same thing. But I think it was Flairs idea to turn heel thus turning Hogan face.

Also, Hogan, Hall, Luger and Steiner got injured in the months following the Fingerpoke which killed the Goldberg vs NWO feud off.

Re: Kevin Nash Comments About Goldberg?

Yea I remember that. They way I understood it, Nash was saying everything would have been great and Nitro would once again have dominated the ratings war if Goldberg had not broken that window.

Re: Kevin Nash Comments About Goldberg?

What changed the tide was

1. WCW announcing the WWF results and Mankind Title Win
2. The WWF having a better visual product and Edgier product
3. WCW having no direction in regards to story lines (The NWO never ended).
4. WCW passing on developing new stars and instead focusing on Old Guys from the WWE. (WCW developed - DDP, Giant, and Goldberg) while the WWF had Austin, Rock, Mandkind, HHH, Angle, and Vince McMahon.
5. The Fingerpoke of Doom was a microcosom of everything that was wrong with WCW, while it devalued the title and didn't make much sense it wasn't the reason for WCW losing the ratings war.

Re: Kevin Nash Comments About Goldberg?

I think people forget that the Fingerpoke Of Doom and the week after both drew a 5.0, which was WCW's highest rating since October 26, the night after Halloween Havoc.

It wasn't what killed WCW, it was the shit that took place in the months following that put the nail in the coffin. From January 4 to April 26, they averaged a 4.2 rating.

They never drew higher than a 4.1 after that. So IMO, WCW was still doing good until the the end of April, when for some reason, ratings started to tank but also, the NWO angle was pretty much dead again.
