How did the 4 Horsemen do it?

One of the best stables of all time, if not the best. They were somehow able to transcend decades of wrestling. Obviously, Ric Flair is the main reason they were so noteworthy, but they lasted so fucking long. Whereas most stables today barely get a solid year. I'm not suggesting that they recreate the stable, although I wouldn't be opposed. Why did they die off? Was it WCW's demise that ultimately killed the group? Kudos to the WWE for making the DVD of the stable as well. Your thoughts?

They lasted for so long because of the standard the original Horsemen set in the 80's. The bar was so high that they were able to come back many times over with the same expectations of the 80's awesomeness. The nWo nearly killed off the Horsemen through various burials. In the end though, Flair became the President in 99ish and became too power hungry. Leading to Flair and the rest of the Horsemen having a fallout.

Yep this is it in a nutshell. The fact that they protected their membership was key. Everytime they let a bafoon into the mix it hurt the credibility of the team.

There were dozens of stables in the 80's but none that had such a high caliber of talent. Only the original Legion of Doom could match and even they did not have anyone like Flair.

I think the first incarnation of the Horsemen was the best and the only one that mattered. All the other attempts to reform the Horsemen didn't work for me and felt watered down. Other than the originals, I only liked the group that featured Benoit and Malenko but it didn't work out in the long run.
