Lightbulb Gene Kiniski: One of the Greatest Ever

Gene Kiniski (1928-2010) was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He was one of 6 children of a local politician. By age 17 he stood over 6 feet. He won a football scholarship and attended the University of Arizona. While playing defensive line for the Edmonton Eskimos, he tore his knee cap, so his football career ended.

After retiring from football, he was trained for wrestling by Dory Funk Sr. To skip ahead a bit, in 1966 he won the NWA world title from Lou Thesz. He held it for over 3 years and defended it about 300 times a year. He had at least 2 nicknames: "Canada's Greatest Athlete" and "Big Thunder". He owned the Vancouver's wrestling promotion, "All Star Wrestling". He had a vocabulary comparable to Sir Winston Churchill's. I owe a lot of my communication skills to him.

He had near endless stamina. In those days main events would be 2 of 3. I saw him wrestle such hall of famers as Jack Brisco, Dory Funk Jr, Harley Race, Don Leo Jonathan, Mark Lewin, John Tolos and others. Most of those matches would go about 55 minutes.

He started as a brawler but developed into a skilled matt technician. One of his tag-team partners was Hard-Boiled Hagerty. He was a great talker too. One time Kiniski called out the Prime Minister and scolded him on the economy.

He was a heel, but he could use words to turn on dime and make fans love him. I sure did.

This is how he closed out his interviews: "Now Ron, I know we're running out of time. So I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow Canadians and American viewing audience for allowing me in their homes via TV. And Ron, you just did a great job of interviewing me. And may the Lord be your companion". (Standing ovation)

Can I ask how old you are? Because I'm pretty sure most people have never seen him wrestle on this forum. I obviously know his name, but I didn't know what he was like so thanks for this.

Kiniski may have been over in BC, but his slow, plodding, methodical in-ring style caused gates to drop off when he was headlining Stampede. I like the guy personally, but he was a hard sell. A modern comparison might be Randy Orton, sound skills, good heel with cross-over appeal, kinda over but not nearly enough to carry a promotion.

I knew as soon as i saw the thread the op would be from Canada. Kiniski was great in my book, but Canadians worship him.

I forgot where Meltzer has him ranked....but i would say yes one of the goats, but only if the list is long. To me he 's not a top 25 guy maybe top 50, maybe
.

I didn't MEAN to try to add anything members couldn't find on Wikipedia SON. Most of that was from memory. I saw Kiniski wrestle those guys live. That's not in Wikipedia. This is a wrestling discussion forum, not Wikipedia. Get it? Give me all the rep reps you want. I'm not to see how many green reps can I get. (But in less than 20 posts I see 2 green.) I'M HERE TO START DISCUSSIONS of subjects of interest.

Who cares if you like my post or not? Why don't you say about Gene Kiniski.

No replies? I guess there's much interest in Classic wrestling. Just the WWE. Oh well, maybe I'll get into this "entertainment" stuff, and forget about when it was really entertaining. Oh boy! Maybe I can get some reps!

Deandre Cole reads my opening post and says it adds nothing he or she couldn't have found in Wikipedia. I note that this peon has about 4500 in a year and a half. This person must spend their life in this forum. I've said this this to someone else and I'll say it to her. Wrestling is one of my favorite wastes of time. It's Cole's life. A waste of time.

Oh, by the way, for the NWA to pick someone to hold their championship for 3 years, that person has to be over more than in BC. Kiniski was over all over the world. That's why the championship committee picked him to replace the legendary Thesz. After his title reign he remained over for years. It was only in his declining years that he was a regional star. During that time he was a local celebrity and would appear on talk shows and comedies. His son, Nick, opened bar in Point Roberts, where I visited with him a few times. Gene Kiniski was nice enough to talk to me. I don't have to go to Wikipedia to learn about someone I knew personally. GET IT ?

I was fortunate enough to catch Kiniski during his Stampede run, so I can only really speak to that. More a matter of his style not meshing with what the fans of the promotion were used to seeing. This was well after his initial NWA title run which was indeed before my time.

Mr Bad Example,

Fisrt off let me welcome you to this section. Thank you for making me feel young . Honestly there are not many posters on here who are as old as us. That is not their fault. It is obivously much easier to comment on things you remember first hand. But there are several guys including Deandre Cole, Walk In, Ideal Stranger, Dusty Roids, 777, Brusier K.C., Shutthehellup, Georgeous One, etc.. who do give a rip about classic wrestling. Actually the fact that this thread has more than 4 reponses is pretty decent. Most posts about forgotten legends only manage a couple of replies.

I meant no disrepect commenting that you are Candaian. I was just pointing out that Kiniski is more beloved and respected by Canadian fans. That is not saying he is not one of the all time greats, he is.

My exposure to Kiniski is limited. He did not do the southern territories as often as I would have liked especially since his career was winding down by the time I started researching wrestling. I remember he was on the "Wreslter" expert panal and would rate other wrestlers every month. Wrestling was still kayfabe in those Apter mags so he would often have negative things to say about my favorites. He was still playing the part of a guy who thought he was the best and always mentioned that fact in his reviews. Therefore as a youngster who bought into kayfabe, he did his job on me....I hated him hahahaha.

Thanks for your input on Kiniski, it might inspire guys like me to do a little more diging into his career.
