Re: Why Didn't this guy work?

I've heard from a couple shoots that he had a huge ego. The injury, and Sable's popularity (I hated the chick, I think most people did, but vinnymac luvs them puppies) got to him. I think I remember hearing that when they started giving Sable more money than him he had sortof a little breakdown and it was downhill from there... really compared to the other wrestlers at the time though he was incredibly unskilled and not really that interesting.

I did enjoy him as "Wildman" Marc Mero, though.

But, by the time WWE ventured into the Attitude Era, the writing was on the wall for Mero. Due to his strong Christian beliefs, he turned down various storylines and just wanted out of the business. Personally, I feel he could have been pretty successful in the mid card.
That's another thing I didn't know. In 1996 he was a very strong midcard player. He came in before the AE kicked off and did good for himself. He won the IC strap was pretty damn over. Had a decent thing going with Hunter & Goldust and then..... splat. It became more about Sable.

Man that AE really kicked the ass of guys with morals huh lol

Re: Why Didn't this guy work?

He was on massive money, but due to being shit, no one wanted to work with him. Eventually the office realised this and pushed people who were more talented.

Incorrect. He worked with Undertaker, had a lengthy program with HHH and had a classic with Austin at KOTR 96.

Problem was, he fucked his knee up at the start of 1997, had to relinquish the IC Title and was never the same. WWE didn't really care to do anything with him, as unlike 1996 when he came in, they were stacked with talent, who were bigger attractions.

Can't remember the specifics but I vividly remember Mero quitting because of an angle he found offensive (something about an affair) but I'm thinking it might have been WCW.

But seriously, check out his feud with HHH or KOTR 96 with Austin. Mero was far from shit. He really did turn to shit after fucking up his knee and the whole Brawl For All and boxer gimmick.

Re: Why Didn't this guy work?

During that time of 1996 Mero was actually higher on the card than Austin even though both were midcard talents. Austin was perceived as a low-mid talent, hell after he won the KOTR he didn't make the Summerslam card and Mero was in a feature match with Goldust and then won the IC title not too long afterwards. Things changed when Bret Hart came back though and Austin leap frogged him and became an upper-midcard talent.
..
Mero was apart of the up-swing in both Austin & Triple H's careers. Its amazing what an insignificant part of history he ended up becoming. Because of his match with Austin at KOTR, Austin was being put over as a legitimate tough guy. He dropped the IC title to Hunter in a well scripted sequence where Mr. Perfect turned heel, that began HHH's push.

Re: Why Didn't this guy work?

His programme with Taker was appauling. Mick Foley also refused to work with him, luckily Vince was high on Mick and instead of a fued with Mero they pushed Mankind vs Austin instead.

His knee injury definitely didn't help him, he was better as a high flyer.

Re: Why Didn't this guy work?

The rumor was that Foley was upset that Mero was paid more than him in WCW. Don't know how true. Also, that was a big reason for the hatred of HHH in 95-96. Foley bashed Mero big time in his book.

And what do you mean Vince pushed for Mankind/Austin instead? At most, they worked together once at the end of 1996. Mero got hurt 2 months later and by the time he came back, you had Austin, Undertaker, Bret, HBK, NOD and HHH all being key players in WWE. By the time Mero came back, time had passed him by. Obviously Vince saw something Mero, seeing as how he was pushed before Austin.

Mero was pretty good but his "Marvelous" Marc Mero character was awful.

Marc Mero.

Body of a professional wrestler. Personality of a doorknob. Face of a high school janitor.
