Default Forgotten Legends87: Universal Heartthrob Austin Idol

Debuting in 1972 as a super heavyweight power lifter, Austin Idol is often taken as a prime example of a territorial great who never went to the national scene.

He dominated the southeast territories during his 36 year run as a wrestler and was renowned for his good looks. He had a brief stint in WWWF working against the then champion Pedro Morales unsuccessfully and had a unfortunate plane accident in 1975.

When he came back, he came back as the Universal Heartthrob with bleached hair, leaner body and a figure four leglock finisher (Wooooo!) much before someone else did the same for similar reasons (correct me if I am wrong). He had a long running feud with Lawler in CWA and AWA at one point vowing to clean up Memphis of Lawler going to shave Lawler's hair off.

He had a failed attempt to start his own promotion in 1993 before disappearing quietly to the background and retiring in 1998.

With 26 title runs to his credit and having feuded with every big name of his time, he is a forgotten legend for mainly not having a big run in the national scene inspite of Idolmania running wild in the territories.

Awesome. I was hoping this topic would come up with your series of threads. One of my all time favorite territory guys. He feuded with just about everybody in the 1970s to early 80s.

Idol was one of my favorites as well. I never understood why the WWF did not give him a shot. The guy had charisma, enough in ring talent for that era, the looks, and big time mic skills. He was a cool heel to cheer for and a baby face that everyone loved. According to what I have heard he was not always the most dependeble guy, and no showed several times, which could be the real reason he was passed over. My favorite Idol story is when he cashed a "check" he recieved for "winning" a battle royal. The promoter was hacked.

He was used more as a face in CWA but people probably remember his alliance with Tommy Rich against Lawler. His run in Memphis was a lot like Mantell and Dundee in that regard, they wrestled as heels often when Lawler needed a rival, but they worked as faces more often. I can only really remember like two or three Idol heel runs and loads of face runs. He was more than not Lawler's partner against the likes of Rude and Bundy, The Road Warriors, The Masked Assasins, The Sheepherders and others.

His fued with Ric Rude in Memphis was one of my favorites.

Do tell me, were Ric Flair and Austin Idol's gimmick similar as in taken from the same guy Buddy Rogers and further, if so, who was the first one and why was Flair able to overtake him? I also understand he had a beef with Hogan taking the "mania" thing from him.
