Lightbulb Bret Hart: Most Overrated Wrestler Ever

I'm fully expecting to get red reps for this, but this is not a popularity contest. I've been hearing about how great Bret Hart is for too long. What's so great about him? Sure he had all the moves, but he never entertained. He could hardly croak out a promo. Upon winning his first world title at the ripe young age of 35, he mumbled that he was "the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be." Not only is that ineloquent, it's stupid and false. There were many better before him, many better at the time, and to claim that no one could conceivably surpass him in eternity is absurd and exceedingly vain. To put it another way, Hart claimed he was the greatest wrestler that could could ever conceivably exist on the WWWhatever space time continuum.

Then, after swearing he'd never have anything to do with the WWWhatever again, he comes back looking like a washed up derelict. He gives pathetic speeches and whines, and they stage a fake reconciliation. This stuff made me sick. I know people who know Bret and his family. I could tell stories that would defame them, but I won't. They're not what you might think they are, except Owen.

That said, bring on the red. I don't care. I don't do this very often. I write for money.

So this is the WWF. Where Hulk Hogan claims to be the WWF champion and Roddy Piper claims to be the baddest apple on the the street. Well boys, meet the REAL WORLD CHAMPION! That's right. It's RIC FLAIR!

While you were in Hollywood making movies, Thunderlips, I was winning world titles. I bled and I sweat and I paid the price to call myself the REAL WORLD CHAMPION. Big Man! I'm calling you out and I'm telling you this: Until you beat Ric Flair, you're just second fiddle. Woooo!

You see that little girl in the front row with those eyes so big and those lips so moist? She's thinking to herself right now as something's going through her, "Oh my God! NATURE BOY! WHAT'S CAUSING ALL THIS!"

You're entitled to your opinion but I always enjoyed him. I guess for wrestling fans who grew up in the cartoon era, more plausible and realistic performers like Bret Hart were really enjoyable to watch, mainly as they seemed so much more legitimate than guys like Doink, Repo Man etc. In 1992, when I was a kid, Bret was the best performer on the roster - his matches with Roddy Piper, British Bulldog and Shawn Michaels were fucking incredible at the time and still hold up today.

I don't question his ability. I just think people tend to forget how truly one dimensional he was.

Shawn Michaels matched him in skill and was a tier above in every other department.

I like him solely because he was fantastic in the ring. He really was among the greatest in ring performers who ever lived. If you can't see that then why are you watching wrestling OP?

Apparently, there are some people in the world who get bored watching wrestling on their wrestling programs. I don't get it.

Re: Bret Hart: Most Overrated Wrestler Ever

If I were to compile a list of the top 20 matches from the 90's including the attitude era, Bret Hart's name would appear in 5 or 6 of them. Him vs taker, him vs Stone Cold, him vs HBK, him vs Owen, him vs Bulldog, and him vs Perfect easily make it.

On the mic he wasn't as slick and smooth as guys like the rock, and he didn't throw out cuss words as easily as someone like Stone Cold, but dammit all if that didn't just make him seem that much more like a real guy and less like everyone else.

And Shawn Michaels may have been better on the mic than he was, possibly he was a more entertaining guy in the ring(though it would be a long argument).. but Bret didn't lose his smile. HBK, like Randy Moss, played when he wanted to play. And when he didn't he took the ball and went home to pout. Bret stuck it out for years with very few days off and putting out 100% for every match. I think maybe that puts him above the heartbreak kid on the "tier" scale.

Re: Bret Hart: Most Overrated Wrestler Ever

Maybe not the most overrated but as a character he is certainly up there imo. He was one of the most dull and boring personalities that made it to the top.

Obviously from an in-ring stand point he was one of the best.
