Analyze This: Commentator's contributions to a great show/match

"What a maneuver!" cries Vince Mcmahon and "It's a slobberknocker!" replies Jim Ross making the match more interesting getting us all involved a lot more than we would normally. Jim Ross, Bobby Heenan, Gorilla Monsoon, Jesse Ventura, Joey Styles, Gordon Sollie, Jerry Lawler are some of the top commentators that normally comes to one's mind with each of them having their own unique style.

How important is a good commentary to a good match or a show in general? Is there any particular examples that you can think of where the commentary saved the match or the show and most importantly, is the quality in commentating declining with times?

Spoiler for Give the guy a break:

Re: Analyze This: Commentator's contributions to a great show/match

1.Watch any Stone Cold segment with Jim Ross on commentatory and a segment without JR on commentatory-One can feel the difference

AW YEAH!!! AUSTIN'S GOT MCMAHON!!! AUSTIN'S GOT MCMAHON-Zamboni Segment

Aw, son of a bitch!"-The Higher Power

IT'S GONNA BE THE ROCK! IT'S GONNA BE AUSTIN! ONE ON ONE! AT WRESTLE MANIA
MAH GAAAAAAWD!

Stone Cold had the greatest save-ins in history and part of it is due to JR screaming STONE COLD STONE COLD STONE COLD

Compare it to a guy who remarked on Christian's return-It's Christian

Taker/HBK WM25, Taker/HBK WM26. Maybe some of the best big match commentary ever for WM25, followed by some of the worst for WM26. That ruined some of their WM26 match to me.
HBK kicks out of 1 tombstone WM25: I JUST HAD AN OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE!!!!!!
HBK kicks out of 2 tombstones WM26: OHHHHHHHHHH!

Yes.

I'll take probably the greatest of all time JR's word for it. He has said before that it matters very much.

EDIT:

My vote should be no. I voted yes because I misunderstood the question. I thought it was about whether or not commentary is important to a match. But commentary has most definitely NOT gotten better with time. In fact it may be at an all time low.

We were spoiled for so long with JR that anybody else seems pretty poor. Regal does an ok job and I was a fan of Taz on commentary, but none of them can compare.

Re: Analyze This: Commentator's contributions to a great show/match

It is pretty much hit and miss, there are some commentators that are great at their job. Some who are terrible. And some teams that just make what you are watching a lot better. At Survivor Series watching JBL go off on Cole was one of the best things. JBL was on fire, but sometimes watching JBL he isn't that great.

Nigel McGuinness on ROH is one of the better commentators of wrestling and he makes the show more enjoyable.

NXT JR does wonders for putting over wrestlers, Regal is just as good.

However, you get some like Kevin Kelly or Jerry Lawler that just ruins it be talking sometimes.

Commentary has gotten worse. JBL is the only bright spot.

Re: Analyze This: Commentator's contributions to a great show/match

Commentary at this point is at an all-time low. I don't care how much Michael Cole has 'improved', he is still one of the worst commentators I've ever heard.

Part of the problem is that all the classic commentators like Jim Ross, Monsoon, Schiavone, Heenan, Lawler etc. all came from a wrestling background. They were either past wrestlers themselves or commentated in different territories. Nowadays commentators are just broadcasters who are there to market the 'product' (fucking hate that word) and going off on tangents as regards to other aspects of the show, rather than calling moves, pushing every star on the roster and educating viewers.

"Yes, I can hear you Clem Fandango!"

Re: Analyze This: Commentator's contributions to a great show/match

Commentary makes a HUGE difference. There's a reason why the better commentators in sports commentate for the bigger games. Especially for something like WWE, commentary is important, they're basically like the storytellers who are supposed to overhype moments and make people more interested in what's going on.

The only thing though, is that there's no story to tell in WWE today, so commentary suffers for reasons like that.
