Default When Attitude started to rub the mainstream the wrong way

I wasn't watching during the Attitude Era because I'd tuned out once I grew up and couldn't deny that it was worked entertainment. Anyway, I stumbled upon this footage from around 1999 which shows the mainstream society and media's growing concern over the Attitude Era at the very beginnings of TV-14 WWF.

Some of you may recognize yourself as children in the footage. LOL.

I think the piece does demonstrate one thing well. You can clearly tell how affected these kids (who many aren't or don't look above 14) are by what they are watching. It spills into the classroom and becomes disruptive. Granted the lack of parental control over what these kids watch is the root cause in the first place.

Look how Vince is defending it here. He's completely right. There's a million shows FULL of sex and violence out there for adults. Why pick on wrestling just because parents don't put restrictions on what their kids watch when it's clearly labeled TV-14 in the first place?

Other interesting bits from the videos is that at this time around '99,
"McMahon argues that 70% of the viewing audience is at least 18"

Also Eric Bischoff being completely full of shit in general.

The rest of the piece talks about the usual fare,
steroids, drug abuse and wrestlers' deaths.

If you watched, what do you make of this look back in time?

I don't think the Attitude Era neccesarily rubbed mainstream the wrong way but it did add some ammunition.

Mainstream already had a bad taste about wrestling (WWE specifically) in the early to mid 90s, during the sexual harassment and steroid scandals. But, since wrestling had long been watched by kids, once the content became adult oriented, it gave media more to complain about. And even then, it was only a small portion.

IMO, wrestling has received more negative attention in the early 90s and after the Benoit murder/suicide because it was real life troubles within the business and not because a form of entertainment some found offensive. Truth is, the rating showed that nobody under 14 should watch without parental advisement and even indicated what may happen on the program. The things that truly rubbed media the wrong way was the 2 periods where wrestling was PG.

Actually I posted the same thread with this footage some months ago. I liked the I don't give a fuck attitude of Vince here where he mocks the soccer moms and the PC police. Sadly, he has become what he made fun of.
I really hope that things will change after Linda has lost now but this will not happen.
To have the real feeling of the AE you need the society like in the late nineties. The society has changed

Hated how wrestling always got singled out back then. Vince was 100% right about how many other shows had stuff on that was every bit as bad or even worse.

Laughed when they said in the video how the WWE is bad because the WWF logo was supposed to be a middle finger. And I also agree that there were plenty other shows that had stuff even worse. But what was great during that time is that WWE and all the other shows didn't care what people said about them. Just like Vince laughed so did Parker & Stone or Marylin Manson.

WWF were getting plenty of complaints around that time because of the huge numbers they were doing on TV in the teens demo. Teachers complaining that kids are saying wrestlers' catchphrases, doing their provocative taunts etc. The old, real, passionate Vince had the "don't like it, don't watch it" mentality and always said that it's the parents' responsibility on what they let their kids watch in 9pm-11pm. That was an awesome article, not for the case of the complainers, but for the people in it(Savage/Nash/Bret/Hogan/Bischoff/Vince/Jericho/Foley/RVD etc). Awesome times. The footage of Vince watching the Henry(Great comedy performance)skit with the interviewer expecting Vince to give him some PC BS excuse and he just laughs in his face, saying how hilarious it is, money every time. Sometimes you wonder what happened to this guy and if he's still there somewhere. You will never see a period close to the talent rosters, the success, creativity and greatness of the MNW. This vid is from around February 1999 BTW.

Haha, has anyone ever brought this up or even thought of the logo as a middle finger?

Now that you mention it, I think I recall the thread but it didn't enter my mind when posting.

These clips are a nice snapshot of that era. This Vince McMahon may very well still exist underneath all the political correctness needed ever since the Benoit murder/suicide and more recently Linda's senate run.

I think people saying that "No way will it ever be edgy like it was before" are not being open minded enough. I don't think Vince has really changed one bit. He's always been very defensive and confrontational about criticism of his empire.

Look at society today. It's even more down the drain in terms of morality, human decency, sociability, and more to the point - boundaries pushed on television and no-boundaries on the internet. Not that I'm against it really, a lot of it just mirrors reality anyhow (teen sex and drug use on TV for instance).

Even if wrestling pushed TV boundaries to their limits, they'd have nothing on some of the content on the internet that Little Billy and Jimmy access on a daily basis, or the realistic next gen video games centered around murdering people and fucking prostitutes. Not all of that was widely available in '99 although sure it was there in a smaller capacity.

I'm with McMahon in this video. It's time to tell the irresponsible parents of the world to fuck off and change the damn channel if they don't want Little Jimmy watching TV-14 Wrestling.

I think they should give us adults a full blown TV-MA wrestling show! Really why the fuck not? They have NXT and all those other B-shows, why not give adults an alternative since ECW went away?

There's a thread in WWE main section about this that I agree with.
If there was ever a time to do something radical and different, it's now after Linda's senate loss which was a situation in which everyone was losing.

Many have seen the .gif of his reaction to Linda's speech on her loss. He's in shambles! He's probably mega pissed about what a waste it's all been. McMahon may just surprise everyone and revamp the product in some major way that brings at least some Attitude or Ruthless Aggression back.

What's there to lose?

Maybe just maybe we might see that Vince again. The Vince that took no shit from media reporters about his product.

Like saying sorry to that women when ADR ripped up a sign is a low point.

I laughed when Vince started to laugh at the Mark Henry clip.
