Analyze This: Celebrity Cameos in Pro-wrestling

Mohammed Ali, Andy Kaufmann, Mike Tyson, Mr.T, Dennis Rodman, David Arquette, Karl Malone, Alice Cooper, K-Fed, Mayweather, Trump, Ortiz all have something in common; they have been involved in pro-wrestling in a feud or a angle. They have been brought in during different times but the idea of bringing them in was the same all the time, bringing in the crowd and sometimes driving them away unintentionally as in case of WCW and Arquette.

How much do you think such celebrity angles in pro-wrestling helped in making the events that they were a part of big and who contributed the most with their angle to the particular organization in your opinion.

Tyson in his angle with DX/Austin helped WWE the most in my opinion.

Spoiler for Give the guy a break:

Re: Analyze This: Celebrity Cameos in Pro-wrestling

Mike Tyson's involvement in 1998 is still one of the biggest moments in the WWE's history, it was very well executed and was perfect. One of the rare things WWE have done well when it comes to involving some sort of celebrity.

Kaufman, Tyson, Rodman, Malone and Trump were a huge success and were presented perfectly into the wrestling product.

Re: Analyze This: Celebrity Cameos in Pro-wrestling

Tyson was the biggest but Kaufmann was the best, especially for the time, artfully blurring the lines between reality, kayfabe, comedy and performance art ,and no one else but him and Lawler could have pulled it off.

Pete Rose deserves a mention, not the biggest but always memorable, funny and down to do whatever.

Worst of this stuff was all those weeks of celeb guest hosts on raw, ugh, most of them obviously didnt give a shit and the ones who did get involved -holy fuck! Freddie Prince Jr and Seth Green fighting wrestlers, jesus that was terrible,I guess Hugh Jackman did ok, but he seems a cool dude anyway. Vince obviously loves that shit though.

I can't remember liking any of them. I was watching WCW when Tyson came on.

Re: Analyze This: Celebrity Cameos in Pro-wrestling

Let's not forget Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T.Actually Mr. T probably did more for wrestling than even Iron Mike.

The earliest examples of "celeb" invovlement were the pro football players and boxers. The early examples being Bronco Nagurski, Dick The Bruiser and Primo Carnerra (who many of you might know as the man who lost the heavyweight boxing title to Max Baer the antagonist from "Cinderella Man"). Heck even Jack Dempsey was used as a ref for a while.

As far as sritctly show biz goes the earliest one I remember was Rick Dees the disco radio jockey from the early 70's but certainly there were stars aside from atheletes around before that?

Anyways I usually think that they detract and make the product look lame, but these five stand alone to me as ones I think really worked.

1. Mr T.
2. Andy Kaufman
3. Mike Tyson
4. Cyndi Lauper
5. William Perry

Re: Analyze This: Celebrity Cameos in Pro-wrestling

I've read that Ali vs. Inoki had great promotion and it did a stellar job at the box office in Japan, but the match sucked because Inoki was restricted on how he could work his offensive wrestling holds with Ali.

Actually, here's a video review of the match:

Ali also famously played a memorable role in the first WrestleMania and only added to all of the star power the Federation stacked that card with and made it such a successful event. Ali even made an appearance in WCW in the 90s. The man was obviously a fan of the business and if any of you saw the Legends Of Wrestling roundtable discussion on the topic of "The Celebrity Effect" on WWE Classics On Demand, Piper had plenty of kind words for Ali and even a cool story of Ali letting him shine at a live event back in the 80s.

Re: Analyze This: Celebrity Cameos in Pro-wrestling

Mike Tyson is the biggest name ever to play a role in WWE but Mr.T importance is not understood by many here.He had a huge role in the success of the first WM.I attended it for Hogan but cheered for Mr.T also.He deserves to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Cyndi Lauper and Andy Kaufmann deserve a shout.
