The nWo's third man speculation
After the Outsider's Scott Hall and Kevin Nash invaded WCW and promised a third man is anybody on this forum old enough to and/or was an internet form to know the speculation of who the third man was before Hulk Hogan was revealed?

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
Not sure about internet talk but the plan was Sting or to a lesser extent Luger if Hogan refused to do it.

Really? I kind of always thought the story was Hogan always wanted to be a part of it and inserted himself in it. I can see how Sting was a possible idea though, the seeds were planted.

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
Speculation was crazy back then because not many had the internet and we had just seen two WWF guys (Hall and Nash) jump ship. Many thought it would be another WWF guy and pretty much all the top WWF stars were rumored amongst fans I talked to back then. Hogan turning was huge though. I was in a room with a lot of people watching that Bash at the Beach and pretty much every single person marked out when it happened.

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
The whole gimmick was that it was guys from the WWF invading (hence The Outsiders), so surely it wouldn't have made any sense for Sting to be the third man.

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
Bret Hart was rumored to be the third man according to many sources and I too believed it back then being a kid and much more gullible then now but he got his 20 year contract and did not jump ship. Sting was the next guy in queue followed by Luger. And then, I guess Creative Control was used for some good finally.

The general idea was a top popular star/face turn into a major heel with the original idea being Bret Hart for he was in negotiation with WCW and WWE at that time and they wanted a Top WWF guy to come and lead the take over.

I wonder what would have happened if it was Hart, him being a faction leader with Hart Foundation already and he could back up all the talk of take over in the ring in a much better way than Hogan other than Hogan no longer being looked at as the WWF guy for he joined WCW a lot before.

As Mcmahon put it, one could build a whole franchise around Hart and with nWo, WCW would have built it around him, much more successfully in my humble and immaterial opinion.

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
No way Hart would have generated the amount of hate that Hogan did. The people hated Hogan for it because they had loved him so much. I don't think people would ever have wanted Hart to lose nearly as much as we wanted to see Hogan lose.

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
I think Bret, Shawn and Taker were all discussed back then. But after reading Bischoffs book, it's clear that the third man was always going to be either Hogan or Sting.

Until 4 days prior to the PPV, Sting was supposed to be the third man. And you can tell by the way the Nitro and bash main event were booked. On Nitro, Sting was pinned very easily by Harlem Heat to lose the Tag Titles, and during the PPV match he "accidentally" knocked out Luger early in the match.

Bischoff approached Hogan with a heel turn several months prior to the NWO angle and Hogan refused. When the Outsiders angle got hot, he asked Eric who the third man would be. Eric said, he didn't know yet. (in his mind Sting would be but I guess he knew where Hogan was going with this). Rest is history.

Re: The nWo's third man speculation
it was supposed to be sting, but he turned it down and hogan did it. Though having read that about Bret, it would have been quite interesting if he was the faction leader.

The 4th man was originally supposed to be British Bulldog, before mcmahon promised him a world title to make him stay.....but didnt deliver, and so he made him the european title instead
