I can't remember who mentioned it in a shoot interview, but I guess Sting was planned to be the third man. Scott Hall eventually convinced Hogan to do it, and the rest is history.

Guess it's good the way it worked out, with Sting's fucking incredible character transformation. Except the awful ending.

Funny, I remember at the time that the big name that it was originally going to be...and I believe Bischoff confirmed it on a radio show, was Lex Luger, with the story being he was there since the first Nitro and there was WWF infiltration from the beginning, but they wanted Hogan to do it and convinced him and ran the "this goes back to 94" route.

In my mind, not that much. Here's an example of how important it was that it was Hogan, the biggest draw of all time, who joined Hall and Nash.

Great American Bash and Bash at the Beach actually lost PPV buys compared to 95. It was only after Hogan joined them that they made an impact. Of course Hall and Nash deserve some credit but the main credit goes to Hogan for the succes of the NWO angle.

Dirtsheets from 1996:

(www): WCW drew over 15,000 fans in Buffalo--one of their best gates
in a long time.

(www): The 24 June 1996 Nitro will feature STING vs LEX LUGER. Some
people are speculating that this will be for the world title or that
Luger will turn (possibly as the third WWFer) at the 16 June 1996
Great American Bash PPV.

(torch): HULK HOGAN should be back in time for the 11 August 1996 PPV
in South Dakota.

I remember thinking it was going to be Bret Hart. He was off WWF TV at the time and I didn't have the internet yet, so I didn't know what was up.
