I believe Hogan was always the guy but they left it up to him. Hogan was afraid to leave Hulkamania behind. But I think they would name drop him on Nitro and he got booed so he restarted thinking the whole idea. Sting said he would do it but he didnt want to but he was a company guy. Luger was the third plan if the other two refused it. Honestly Luger made more sense than Sting did but Sting wouldve been a bigger shock than luger.
Reading Hogans book, even walking down the ramp, Hogan didn't know if he would do it. He didn't really go into great detail, but bishoff said that it was hogans idea, and then he backed out, before finally agreeing a few days before the ppv.
I was 6, but I remember thinking it was Luger. Mainly because I just didn't like him.
I wonder how the NWO would have got over had it been anyone other than Hogan as the 3rd man. Can't see Sting, Hart or even HBK bringing to the NWO what Hogan did.
Indeed. I'm not a massive fan of Hulk as a babyface, especially his 80s/90s run, he was cheesy as hell but watching the old videos, I'm surprised by just how intense he was as a heel. His intensity along with the cool bad guys of Nash and Hall made the NWO. I wish they'd stuck with those three, well maybe add the Macho Man as well but stop at those 4.
Kevin Nash and Scott Hall have both said in separate shoot interviews that Eric Bischoff had no idea where he was going to go with everything as all he had was a couple of people who was being seen as WWE guys coming in and looking stronger than all of WCW put together. The plan was for Sting to turn heel firstly seeing as he was seen as WCW through and through but he turned it down so Eric Bischoff went to Hulk Hogan who also turned it down due to him not accepting the fans had turned on him.
It was only a few days before when Eric Bischoff still had no concrete idea on who would be the third man that Hulk Hogan went to him and said he would be the third man but he hadn't fully committed to the idea which is why Lex Luger was going to do it. Because of all the uncertainty surrounding who would be the third man Lex Luger was "injured" during the match and said to be backstage prepared to be the third man if he had to be but Hulk Hogan came through and did it and the rest as they say is history.
