I am currently watching the Attitude Era online as I was too young to understand it then (I would have been 3-5 years old), but I have watched from April of 1998 to January of 2000 (which is where I am currently up to now). Would I have missed anything worth watching from before April of 1998? I know that there was the Screwjob and the Bret Hart's occasional rants, and DX too, but was there anything else?
Thanks. And I am going to continue watching until the end of 2001.
I actually think you should start at summerslam '97 as it pretty much started the Bret/Shawn and Shawn/Undertaker feuds and would eventually go on to Montreal and the first HIAC/Kane's debut.
I'd start early 97, Raw was actually super underrated in 97. There as is early 98. It's that weird transitional phase where people like Tom Brandi were still getting pushes but also contains most of the start of the attitude eras stars shining through too. For the record I don't dislike Brandi I'm just pointing out the transitional period
I would suggest the same start as in WWE '13 in the AE mode. Summerslam 1997 with the beginning of Undertaker/HBK feud which led to Kane debuting. You also have the DX rise and other things that were typical to the Attitude Era. I had the same problem as you but my dad was an hardcore fan and I always watched Raw with him. Eventually went back and watched from the first Raw.
Yeah, what this guy said. Start at the beginning. You (OP) probably won't want to watch the modern product after that though so it may be a double edged sword.
My most memorable moment that I think signifies the starting of the attitude era is king of the ring 1996. If you don't start at the first raw, start in 1996. You also have the Bret hart/ stone cold feud in 96 through 97 which was an awesome feud
1997 is actually one of my favourite years as far as the WWF (and the industry in general) goes. Bret Hart as an awesome heel in awesome feuds with the likes of Stone Cold; the very first 'Hell in a Cell' match between HBK/Taker at Badd Blood as well as the great match they had at Ground Zero one month before and the extremely entertaining evolution of The Rock spring to mind. As previously suggested, it would be a good idea to go right back to the beginning of Raw in (January) '93 and watch from there. You could continue watching from where you are right now and mix it up with the beginning of Raw. It's rewarding to track the progress of the company.
I'm actually in the process of watching as much WWF/WCW/ECW as I can starting from 1990. I've watched every 'Power Hour' from that year and I'm now on 'Wrestling Challenge' with all the PPV's and SNME's lined up for in between. It's reminding me why I watched wrestling in the first place.
Start from the King of the Ring 1996 when Austin 3:16 was born and WWE became more edgy, thanks to the change in the writing team.
The Brian Pillman gun incident is something you should not miss. Pillman and Austin were great friends, had a great chemistry together starting from their WCW days and they had great segments mid 96-mid 97 like the Shitman promo or when Austin attacked Pillman's leg.
I suggest that you should start watching June 1996
I think you should get all of the WCW Nitro episodes too & watch both at the same time. When one show is doing something you don't care about, switch to the other. That's more what it was like.
I would just start from the beginning of 1997 on forward for the attitude era stuff to see it in it's early days. Although mid 1997 (after SummerSlam 1997) on forward would be best to really get into the thick of it because at that point you had DX forming, HBK/Bret feud, Taker/Kane, Austin beating everybody's ass including the beginning of his feud with Vince. Rock was starting to turn the corner and become a star. He actually was feuding with Austin a bit for the IC title.
Start with the first ever Raw is War on March 10th 97. If you start in April 98, you'd miss so many historic things. Austin/Bret double turn, birth of DX, arrival of Kane, Montreal Screwjob, Mike Tyson and the best Raw in history from September 22nd 97 in MSG. This is where Austin stunned McMahon for the very first time. You can't miss any of that.
And like someone else already said. Watch Raw and Nitro back to back and you'll have a blast.
It is worth watching from the first RAW for the commentary of Bobby Heenan and Vince McMahon alone. The wrestling in this era was good, but the commentary was even better. Looking back at some of these vids I really miss Heenan.
Where online can these videos be found as I was also too young to enjoy the beginning of the attitude era so would love to be able to see what I missed.
