Default Forgotten Legends70: Happy Humphrey

As cheesy as the name sounds, he was one of the major draws during his period of 1953-1962. He was not the most athletic guy or the most charismatic performer, he was simply BIG weighing anywhere from as low as 750 pounds to as high as 900 pounds.

Uncommonly strong for his flab, he is said to have wrestled a bear for over 28 minutes in a carnival. He became a huge attraction during the television era with his most common opponent being Haystacks Calhoun (not loch ness of WCW) who usually weighed around 600 pounds and was extremely quick and talented for his size (his day Vader or Bam Bam) and he was one of the first wrestlers to have sold out MSG for Vince Mcmahon Sr. against Haystacks.

Part of his gimmick was coming in a modified 1951 Pontiac which at one time was driven by future legend Harley Race for his first break in wrestling. Race credited Humphrey for teaching him on how to take bumps considering his size needed to take bump in the match climaxes and also taught him humility signing autographs for everyone single one of them who cared to ask.

He had a doctor regulated lifestyle later undergoing surgery to shed a lot of weight which he gained back dying due to heart attack at 600 pounds, after contributing to obesity and weight reduction studies.

A forgotten legend, especially for bringing in the size factor much before Andre, Yokozuna and Big show.

One of the missing things from modern wrestling are the big fatties. Not every wrestler has to be a top caliber athlete, spot monkey, or Mr. Olympia candidate. Some of the big fatties were legendary in their time, and it's a shame guys like that don't get a chance anymore.

I think he also held the world record for weight loss at one point as well.

He lost 570 pounds and became the champion slimmer in Guinness Books of World Records.

My grand dad used to tell stories of him. He spent a lot of time in our hometown of Augusta, GA. He said he was quite a sight to see. He said they would specifically close down entire buffets so that Happy could come eat. Crazy!
