Excellent . The work is stellar and intricate enough to hold your attention even if you think of it nothing more as exhibition esque work. The better bouts though work pacing, structure and enough in the way of a story to make it feel like a wrestling match that can actually grip you beyond the holds. E.G Myers/Grey 11/22/75, Breaks/Street and other matches. There's also some painfully stiff violence in the 70s bouts, namely the Breaks/Saint match from '73 where Breaks' nose gets broken.

Broken nose via unrelenting grappling?

Not sure if he was mentioned here yet so I'll drop him right now: Thoughts on Johnny Saint? Though the magic of Chikara I've familiarized myself with him and gone back to view some of his old work. Guy is so slick.

Saint's a hard one. He's slick and his work is tricked out, but compared to a few guys it becomes a little spotty on occasion. For whatever reason despite being a very skilled and talented grappler he doesn't seem to be able to have the range of matches other guys do. Saint/Grey (1/28/80) is astoundingly great though. Grey is outclassed and it becomes a narrative of him trying desperately to fend off and usurp Saint with no luck.

In the Breaks match Saint gets pissed at Breaks' antics (an underappreciated trait of Saint tbf, dude was great at getting pissed and dishing out punishment in a way that felt natural and not heelish) and does a takedown before open hand slapping him on the bridge of the nose, doing two stiff nose breaker stomps across his face and a really ugly and nasty submission where he traps the arm and places his hand on Breaks' nose almost suffocating him whilst wripping at the nose. Hideously violent.

Classic violent Johnny Saint.

Ah Jim Breaks, even McQueen has heard of the man's exploits. People should check out his matches against Young David (Davey Boy Smith) from 12/3/79 & 2/13/80. Masterclases from Breaks in guiding a very competent but ultimately inexperienced teenager in Davey Boy to two stellar matches. Finlay is equally as astude in the 3/9/82 encounter with Young David.

Watched Jones vs Dynamite Kid which was posted on the OP here. Ok, I'll start fast and state I loved the hell out of it. Captured my interest immediately, character paths were mapped out quickly, it had so much to bite on it really was a perfect way to introduce anyone who is new yet familiar to the product (myself) or anyone who flat out has never seen/heard of this style. First aspect which hooked me in, and maybe I'm alone on it, was the crowd. Yep, absolutely the crowd made this a joy to view. So passionate. Had those flashbacks to the NWA/early WCW days with how much the fans - noticed a LOT of dames in particular - got into the work. Jones was mad loved. Not over, he was loved by the fans. Anytime Kid would do a dirty strike, oh they wanted his blood. They nearly got it too as it pissed Jones off every time.

Speaking of, Dynamite's rise into dirtier and dirtier tactics as the match worth on was excellent. Starting with getting frustrated out of hold for hold grapples. Slapping Jones. Jones fury wasn't set to burst just yet, so he fired back with his own slap to teach the youngster a lesson. Things rage on and so does Dynamite's attempts at working more like a heel. So much fun to see. Loved the building it led to. Dynamite would soon nearly through the entire rule book out (pointed by the commentator as "he's not familiar to the rules here" haha) Every time Dynamite would tarnish the pure nature of the sport, Jones was get PISSED. Best example of this was following about the second slap which led Jones to to grab Dynamite by his head and chuck him through the ropes leading to one hell of a stiff bump on the concrete floor. Conveyed how Jones was sick of his games and showed Dynamite how he wasn't going to take his crap anymore. Don't get me started on Dynamite kicking Jones square in the face the moment one of the rounds ended HEAT PERSONIFIED. Oh, and JONES WANTED TO KILL HIM. Moment the next round started it was hell on earth for Dynamite. Eating some gnarly whips into the ropes & eventually getting crossbodied by Jones over the top. Heel work was bliss here only b/c of how much fun it was to see Dynamite keep on poking the bear. He poked him so much that Jones had to snap. Playing possum for one spot & hitting/attempting the top rope flying headbutt - despite being illegal - all came into play too. Fabulous. Hope this didn't sound all too one sided. Dynamite's heel work was great and a blast to see, but Jones as the rugged face teaching the punk a lesson was very bossy. On par, if not better simply b/c the subtle rise of aggression was legit worthy. You wanted to see Dynamite get roughed up at the end.

So, obviously the ring work in this was top notch quality too. Couldn't help but only harp on the other factors which earned my love while watching such as immense crowd participation & great character work by both men. Can't remember the other Marty Jones matches if recommended specifically by good ol WOOLCOCK, but I'm plenty open for them.

That gave me a broner, unintentionally inspired male boner. That was amazing to read. You pretty much covered everything about the match that makes it great. Should point out Dynamite is a far more vicious and overt prick here than you'd ever get in 99% of other WOS matches. I mean, people like Jim Breaks will cry and bitch to a referee and take shortcuts but not to the extent DK did in that match. Possibly the most dickheaded performance in WOS history. Jones as you documented however has a really astute ability to alter his approach and build the match perfectly to the next stage and reacts perfectly to all of DK's antics. He tries to outwrestle and humiliate DK and when the antics prove too tiresome he sets about forearming his jaw into needing corrective surgery.

Ken fuckin' Walton is the commentator btw. Absolute legend. The crowd do add to a ton of bouts, since they have their favourites and will react to all heel antics with aplomb as well as having a very respectful and Japanese esque approach to applauding the work during stalemates/breaks and remaining respectfully silent during the grappling.

Jones/Finlay & Jones/Bull Blitzer in the OP would be the next batch of Jones I'd recommend. Still working my way through some of his 70s bouts atm and both of those from '84 and '86 respectively are tremendous matches that I can't see you not liking if the DK match got your testes all hot. Special mention to one of my favourite spots ever in a match when Finlay is in a boston crab and outsmarts Jones with meticulous brilliance. You'll know it when you see it.

Nifty mention on the fans assimilating themselves to that of various Japanese crowds. My brother popped in my room while I was watching it and made a comment about them watching as if they were in Japan. Fit the bill to a T.

Wished I made more of a comment towards the commentary. One man booth and he sold the match perfectly. Made me think of how Vince missed this guy, but signed tripe such as Lord Alfred Hayes who was stuttering and hardly enunciate proper words to be fully understood. May he RIP, but damn when you compare other English commentators to him it puts Hayes down VERY low.

So heels were more of a a sneaky, if not cowardly more often than not I take it? Well, knowing the fact on adds more to Dynamite's ultimate dick tactics in the match. Gives it more of a evil outsider type deal to me. Almost like "if Dynamite returns, he'll have the reputation of working very dirty against his opponents so watch out!"

I'll definitely get on the others soon. Not making the mistake of giving a date again. Always best when the mood strikes like it was tonight (and I swear to you, EVERYTHING popped up trying to make sure I wouldn't watch Jones vs Dynamite. Alas I persevered to finish it. What a treat.) Almost jumped on a Finlay match first, yet I throttled back and decided to run through the OP list in order. May or may not benefited for future viewings. Perhaps it has considering it reached the height of brutal asshole heel work, only to recede down to a normal dose from other matches.

Yeah the UK crowd are a good hand. For some slower more amateur grappling bouts they can be quiet and as I said waiting for a sudden increase in pace or a well timed counter/escape before giving a respectful applause. However in big title matches or indeed just having the right sort of guy (Steve Grey was forever a popular bloke) they can also react during the grappling or more specifically the rope running exchanges. Myers/Grey 11/22/75 has a really rabid crowd who become unglued the minute they take it to their feet and run the ropes with amazingly timed counters and pin attempts.

Heels in WOS are more comical and simple in their cheating. They basically play more common and regular characters but just ham it up when necessary. Jim Breaks is probably the best example. He'd audibly scream during holds, get into conversations with the referee and the crowd either during or after a hold he felt was illegal and generally just easily got under the crowd's skin with his arrogance and petulance. Because of the style you're not going to get intricate heel mannerisms for the most part, but rather just simple expressions which could anger a crowd. The way babyfaces play off of and react to heel characters is also an understated brilliance of WOS.

Walton is a very classy commentator. Really sells you on the merit of each performer and will give brief tidbits about their backstory or hometown when necessary. He knows his stuff and can really get you invested in a bout with the way he puts over the action and almost second guesses the performers and what counter they'll attempt and really manages to take a backseat to the wrestling and serve more as a gentle voice rather than making himself the focus of the viewer.

Get to the others when you next have some time mate. Just watching one match and loving it has left me satisfied I'm not bonkers in thinking the WOS style has continental crossover appeal .
