Maybe not the cream of the crop to represent the nature of the style, yet tons of fun in viewing. Ideal starting point for me was Marty Jones...until I found vids of Liger working WOS. So naturally I had to check it out. Got it out of my system. Though I'm keeping my eyes open for any more gems I can stumble upon. He was even a bit of a boss working here. How fabulous. Since my history on this is so minimal, I do wonder if Liger's Japanese Juniors blend mixed with the steady flow of WOS was a new sight at this time. Possibly not too much considering it was the latter 80's already. Wrestling had progressed a ton by this point and time.

Who's a tease now? :hayley1

Well Sayama (Tiger Mask) toured WOS in the early 80s as Sammy Lee before taking up the Tiger Mask persona. From what I've heard he got over immensely because of the speed and style he was working, which to many was a pure novelty compared to the grappling that dominated the WOS style. Not seen much of Liger in WOS but I imagine his style and different approach would have served him well popularity wise and matching up as a contrast to the British wrestlers.

Now watch Marty feckin' Jones dammit. Liger is godly in the 90s in his prime but he can't hold a candle to Marty Jones when it comes to WOS and the British style .

yeah Ive seen a few Sammy Lee matches from around 81, he basically had a Bruce Lee gimmick and was by far the most over guy in terms of crowd reactions, big OOOHH and AAAHH's for nearly everything he does. Not the typical style but the best WOS guys can adapt, he works well against someone like Sid Cooper who can play the funny gruff english heel baffled by this guy flipping around.

Liger seemed to generate quite the response from the crowd during that match. Seems the UK fans took a real shine to whenever a Japanese talent came over for a show or two.

Liger can't hold a candle to someone? If Jones doesn't blow me away I'll come at you for ever so slightly not putting over Liger even though you actually did in a more true to form situation. So....yeah. It's pressure time. (you'll have to wait. Think I should power nap it to get SOME sleep for today. Then I can watch some before I decide to do whatever it is I'll do to knock this day out. )

No-one was ever going to be able to work opposite Sayama as well as Fujiwara did. Amazes me people cite the DK/Sayama series as ground breaking when I can't think of one match of their series that's better than the worst Fujiwara/Tiger Mask matches. Oh man now I'm contemplating Fujiwara in WOS and giving myself a headache at what we could have been treated to.

Btw, the other Rocco/Jones bout is from 7/26/78 Hanoi. I imagine it'll be on Youtube with either the exact or similar date (there's usually a discrepancy between the taped date and the actual air date on the youtube videos so anything mid-late july or early august will be the match).

Yeah touring wrestlers particularly those of the Japanese persuasion were very popular because of a seemingly revolutionary and ground-breaking style that was a real novelty for those in attendance.

I'm speaking purely from a British perspective. Jones mastered the style and is one of the quintessential pioneers of the British style as well as making it versatile by incorporating a more rugged and violent match when the situation called for it. I think he's one of the lost great workers who no-one thinks of, but yeah any comparison to Liger was purely based on him exceeding Liger in WOS work. Seabs pimped Liger/Togo from '96 at t'other place earlier and I'm giddy to watch that this week at some point.

Yeah get around to it when you can. No rush buddy . Ok I lie there, there is a time factor because the longer you ignore and continue to avoid Marty Jones and his infinite talent whilst raping your eyes with 35 minute ROH matches the more you're missing out.

Figured as much. Either the commentator claimed that to be Liger's debut or following his debut. No matter as those fans were into him.

Oh I know. Perpetual stupid Liger mark here busting your balls for no reason. I'm excited so see Jones work after all of this pimping by yourself. I'm such a "keep wrestling a sport" fan at heart that this might be a perfect union for me.

Ugh. Stupid ROH. Making me look like a fool as I keep up when I should be exploring the goodness of WOS. Not anymore. Making amends commences later today. Bet nothing valuable on it b/c you never but YES - later today.

Re: Official World Of Sport (British Wrestling 1970s-1980s) Appreciation Thread

He's one of the best WOS produced. In terms of pure grapplers there's a few I'd take ahead of him, based solely on them working more extensive matwork compared to Jones who from the early 80s onwards developed a more European style that wasn't centred around sole matwork and grappling. His violent offence, strong selling, ability to convey changing emotions as a match developed and strong bumping really differentiate him from the others who you have to judge in terms of their grappling and ability to convey a structure that makes the match less of a shameless exhibition.

Only guy who could rival Jones for me in terms of having more of offer beyond matwork and grappling is Steve Grey. Subtle but poignant babyface with strong selling and able to feed off a crowd and inject charisma and atmosphere into a match. Like Jones he's also very astute at working physical when he has to.

So to reiterate things: Jones has that hard-nosed style much like Regal & Finlay, right? That's why you're pushing the rec for me b/c I'm so keen on the style. I could backtrack a few posts, but meh, asking again doesn't hurt. Heel or face dynamic too. Or fairly sporadic over the years?

Yeah the 80s bouts I linked you to see him employing a violent and european style that isn't far from what Regal and Finlay employed. The chain wrestling isn't as intricate and amateur based as what you get with the quintessential British style, so its a good way for US accustomed fans to get into WOS without having to become aware of the British style immediately .

Luckily my knowledge on British catch/Lancashire is pretty solid for when that time comes.
