Analyze This: Goldberg's Streak

Standing 6'4'' and 285 pounds/120.7 Kgs with a good build and not a monstrous one like Brock Lesnar, What did you think worked in Goldberg's favor selling his streak and getting him as over as he was considering the kind of guys he had around at that time like Nash, Hall, Sid, Steiner, Hogan, Luger, The Giant who were either bigger in height/size or more muscular than him? Who else could have sold a streak like him, Vader?

I think Goldbeg's streak was simply an extension of his "look". He just knew how to carry himself. I mean the guys like The Warlord, Sid Vicious, and Vader had "looks" that made them every bit as imposing but none of them had the demeanor. The way they simply walked to the ring could not touch Goldberg's entrance.

I think allot of it had to do with the way WCW packaged him. In these cases the less the guy talked the more imposing he was. Same with Undertaker, once they started havong Goldberg talk the less intimidating he seemed.

I think fans do not realize how important the "show" is, and by that I mean the simple art of the ring entrance. In that respect Goldberg was one of the greatest of all time.

Well that is not true that most of his wins were made up.
According to The History of WWE site, which covers WCW results. Goldberg had according to my calculations just before he lost 162-0. Sure some of his matches might have been made up. but since the offical record is 173-0 that only says that 11 matches are made up. And the fact that the site does not cover 100% of all wrestling shows, there are a high possibility that there are more matches not included

Graham's site is about 99% complete and accurate for matches during that era. I think they counted some non matches kinda like they did with Sid's streak. Any time he power bombed somebody they counted it as a win.

I somewhat think the streak was a bad idea and I'll tell you why.

It was a great way for WCW to introduce a new character and all but it also left the door open for him to be exposed. What I mean by exposed is, Goldberg often squashed guys, so when the time came for him to really work a match, it was easy to realize that he wasn't as polished as he should have been. Not only that but you bury half your roster (WCW's roster was so big, whatever Goldberg's record was likely only consisted of half the roster) and wouldn't properly build up for a big match, mainly Hogan/Goldberg.

So the time has to come where the streak ends and they didn't know what direction to take. I still feel that Nash was the right choice, as he was the only top name in WCW that Goldberg didn't beat. The rest is history. So without the streak to drive off of anymore, Goldberg appeared more and more like your typical WCW wrestler. The monster was gone and his lack of wrestling skill was really evident when he ended Bret's career.

I think Mike Awesome could have worked well with a gimmick like that because he often would destroy anybody in the ring with him but also, when the time came to end the streak, he still could go out & really work a match. Goldberg without the streak is just another guy in WCW's overloaded mid card in the late 90s. So WCW did good in making him stand out but IMO, didn't think it out all the way and had nothing to hide his rather reckless wrestling style.

wcw really fucked up when it came to the payoff of the streak. coulda filled a 90,000 stadium and millions of PPV buys at starrcade with that, maybe gotten to 200-0

another mistake was having it end to kevin nash, an up and comer who needed the rub

:hhh

As Greenlawler said, it really went along his look. The fact that Goldberg looked like someone who could beat anyone and was booked to feel like it too all added up to very solid package. Apart from a couple of wrestlers not many had that badass look that goldberg had.

Yeah, back in 1998 Goldberg was super hot. But at the same time WCW had its strongest roster ever. And as mentioned earlier WCW would have drawn good money if they made Goldberg gone 199-0 in to a PPV against the right opponent. And before laughing at me for suggesting this. Just think about it marketing wise and if them promos and build was made correct it would have been huge.

Imagine to have Goldberg (199-0) go against The Warrior. Sure Warrior was similar to Goldberg in styles ant type of squashes. But it a real good booker took care of it as well as a real good road agent to help them walk thru the mathc. That match would have been epic. Warrior was a draw at the time, had strong name value to the audience.

In a typical Face vs Face classic that would have been awesome.

And yes. WCW DID coutn Goldbergs houseshow matches to his streak. Otherwise there would be no way in hell Goldberg would have been reaching those numbers within 14 months.

Impressive list, but on my list I have 162 matches, up until his loss, and I am not counting any matches prior his debut on Nitro. But If I did count the pre-debut matches, I would add 11.

So 162+11 is infact 173. Which is his official streak too :)

Was recently watching a 2001 shoot with Bobby Heenan talking to Meltzer just after WCW went bust, Heenan said Goldberg losing was the dumbest decision of all in WCW (which is saying a lot), said if it was up to him Goldberg would have never lost, they should have just ran and ran with it while he was still so hot.

full interview here if anyone is interested (you should be, the Brain is always awesome)

I agree with the others. Goldberg had 'it'. A package of intensity, menace and apparent strength. He could have been the only one to have the streak at that time.

But it was doomed from the start, I felt. The problem with The Streak was that at some point Goldberg would have to lose, otherwise he would become stale. The audience needs to connect with him on a human level and if he's some indestructible monster who never errs nor fails, then the audience would stop caring. However, it could never end satisfyingly because Goldberg did not have the ring skills in order to produce a match that would provide a sufficient conclusion to his streak. He couldn't go 20 minutes because then he would be exposed. He could never lose in a great match that would make both competitors coming out looking strong.

As stated, Goldberg did a lot of dark matches prior his debut, wrestling the likes of The Armstrong Brothers. But since Goldberg DID lose ONE dark match, I do not include any of his dark matches prior his debut in September at Nitro.

So back to the old topic. Since Grahams site is not 100% complete, there might still be results missing and that would give Goldbergs streak even more matches making it closer to the official 173-0 streak record.

As far as Goldbergs matches in WWE, he only suffered 5 losses. But again he only wrestled 56 times so hiss loss ratio was about 9%.

I'm definitely a fan. Goldberg was a lot better in the ring than people give him credit for. He had some of the best armbars around and was just as agile as anybody has ever been.

I looked through Cawthon's website, footage to make sure the TV matches happened along with dates / locations, and cross examined various fan websites to match the info and so far this is Goldberg's legitimate Streak number. My guess is somebody in creative lost track of the actual number and made one up for fans to go along with.

What made it confusing for me is it turns out Goldberg would wrestle a house show the same day as a taped match of his would be aired which is why you will see the same date for two different locations or Goldberg will wrestle two matches in one night, one on TV and one for a dark match before or after the show so you'll see the same location.

That's a 19 match difference. BUT, if you include:

- The 4 dark matches he won before he made his TV debut

- The seven other opponents in the Road Wild battle royale

- Barbarian in the Handicapped Match

- Hogan from the tag team match

- The four matches that ended in No Contest (Disco Inferno on Nitro in 97, the Thunder match with Chavo Guerrero in 98, the Nitro match with Bam Bam Bigelow, and the triple threat match involving Nash and Bigelow) for Bill as wins

- The house show main event match against Giant that he missed due to flight problems
That brings Goldberg's record to 172 so that's a 1 match difference instead.

RANT: It's crazy to see how many jobbers Goldberg wrestled even after he won the US and WCW title yet Chris Jericho couldn't get match with him!!! I'm also surprised that Randy Savage, Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, and That One Guy never squared off against The Man!

Nobody. In an age where most heroes were corny, you had a man that was like a coke-fueled human buzzsaw. He was a guy that good powerslam you one minute, then snap your spine by spearing you with awe-inspiring agility. The perfect antithesis to the theatrics of Hogan, DX, NWO and Crow-Sting. True, he was the right guy at the right time, but his body language and presence was something WCW had never seen before from a babyface.

In a way,it reminded me of the rise of young Iron Mike. A kid with the explosive power, fear-factor yet surprising speed that simply overwhelmed the old kings of the division.

Goldberg's streak should've gone while it was hot. He was over as hell, getting great pops, making the company tons of money. Once it starts getting stale, then you end it at one of the major PPVs (ideally Starrcade) in a match for a milestone number (i.e. 199-0 or 249-0, something like that). Then have him go up against a big name tweener, like Sting or someone who ending the streak won't hurt their career
