Shawn Michaels back injury saved his life?

As we all know, in the AE Shawn Michaels had a destructive personality. He was a prick, and addicted to drugs/ painkillers. If Shawn didnt get the back injury at The Rumble, he might still have been on the destructive path and might not even be alive today.

Thoughts?

Only Shawn knows. We could change it to a 4 year hiatus

I don't know if it saved his life as Shawn Michaels even at his worst wasn't as bad as Scott Hall, Jake Roberts or Jeff Hardy have been and they are all still around. The fact is that even when at the height of his drug addiction whilst wrestling through 1995 to 1998 Shawn Michaels was still the best in ring performer in the world so it didn't actually affect his career.

Of course Shawn Michaels having his back injury helped turn his life around due to him meeting his wife and then finding religion which he only managed to do due to not being on the road and working a full time WWE schedule. Without that time off Shawn Michaels wouldn't have continued down the same road and would probably be have been in the same position as Jeff Hardy was in 2011 in regards to the effect drugs could have taken on him but Shawn Michaels always managed to work through and no one could really tell.

As for the back injury being legitimate it definitely was as he had back surgery sometime in mid 1998 which meant he couldn't really even train properly until the very end of that year and meant the planned Michaels/Triple H match for WrestleMania 15 was cancelled. It was sometime in early 1999 that it came about that the injury was worse than first thought and that's why he set up his own wrestling school in 1999 as from what the doctors were saying he was completely done in terms of being an in ring performer.

Did seem like some sort of miracle when he came back to wrestle in 2002 and looked the same in ring wise.

Oh Dave, been looking for a transcript of that Sting promo to use a a sig myself lol.

I'm thinking that Shawn just wanted an extended break from the business, which is when he had some form of a revelation. Now, some say it's all a work, which makes me think his injury was a work.

But, with that extended vacation, he got to properly heal any injuries he might have had and didn't have to rely as much on the alcohol & drugs. I won't say it saved his life because who knows the damage already done to his heart. But, if his "finding God" deal is real, it's nice that he finally asked for forgiveness for all the wrong he's done and can live a peaceful life.

Injuries at work are very common specially with wrestlers. Slam, bangs, or even hit each others up with a stool are very usual. But even so, wrestler still need to be careful in the ring, because sometimes just a little bad fall can end their career on television.

The injury was legit. He had 2 completley herniated discs in his back, and another disc that was completely smashed in there. He took the first 10 months or so to try to rehab it without surgery. In early 1999, his doctor, Dr. Vasquez in San Antonio told Shawn he had to have the surgery and that the rehab wasn't working. He had surgery in January 1999, nearly a full year after his match at Wrestlemania 14.

I read on Shawn's twitter a month or two ago, a fan said to him "You wouldn't be where you are today without that back injury in 1998." Shawn retweeted that and added "You're absolutely right. Best thing that ever happened to me!"

So, obviously, he feels that it saved his life, as well, and he was headed down a bad path. Now, he had the surgery in January 1999, so I'd say by mid 2000, he might have been able to wrestle again. But even after the back surgery, he was still hooked to drugs and wouldn't stop taking them, even though the back injury had healed.

So, as a longtime HBK fan, who has thought and searched about this situation for many years, the first half of his hiatus (1998-2000) he was dealing with his back: rehabbing it, it not working, surgery in January 1999, it healing for a year or so. Then, the 2nd half of his hiatus after the surgery (2000-2002) he dealt more with his drug addiction and had his fight with Triple H and didn't talk to him for a year. It wasn't until April 2002 he became "saved" and "born again." And just 4 short months after that, he was in the ring again.

That's my summary of that situation. I've been a longtime fan of the guy since the early 90s and grew up during the mid 90s/Attitude Era and have always been very interested in this time in Shawn's life and have very carefully searched for info about what happened during these years in his life. To my knowledge, this is the most accurate account.

Can you explain what happened between Michaels and Triple H around that time?

It's the second time I see someone mention this but every time I try to find information on the subject I can't find anything.

Sure. Just so you know, Shawn explains it on his "Heartbreak & Triumph" DVD. It started when Vince bought WCW. When they ran the angle where Shane went onto Nitro and bought WCW out from under Vince, all of the wrestlers backstage were watching this segment. Shawn came in to the room "pilled out of his and half-drooling on himself" as Triple H explained it in the DVD, and made himself look really bad in front of everyone. Vince heard about it, and told Triple H to tell Shawn he was done with the company. So, he told him. Shawn then cut a huge promo on Triple H in front of the entire locker room, telling him he didn't go to bat for Shawn and that he can go fuck himself.

So, as a result, they didn't talk for a year. Then a year later, Shawn had a situation at home where his son was starting to get alittle older and notice that Shawn was high, or sleepy all the time. He and his son ate a bunch of cookies, and Shawn didn't remember it at all. That and a phone call that night with Kevin Nash started to wake him up. Nash pretty much told Shawn he can't be taking the drugs anymore and that te situation with Triple H was Shawn's fault. He told Shawn to call Triple H, and he did, and they buried the hatchet, and Shawn came back to Raw as a member of the nWo.
