Re: Owen Hart wins WWF title
I never really saw him as main event champ material either.

Re: Owen Hart wins WWF title
The time to give it to him was late 94/early 95. He shouldve tricked Backlund into a match and won it. It wouldve set up Bret-Owen III at WM 11

Could had been great if it happened during his feud with Bret. I think it could had been perfect and many more classic matches

And yet these past few years, we've had Khali, Ziggler, Miz, Bryan as world champs. Hell a few years ago I would have never imagined Mark Henry winning the world title either but one major push and he would have been back in the title scene as well.

Agreed.
As much as i'd liked to have seen it, I don't think there was any chance of Owen winning the WWE Title once Bret left, even if he had taken 'The Game' gimmick. Should have won it during 94-96, though, especially when you look at some of the title reigns during that time.
When the likes of Khali, Mark Henry and Ziggler were winning titles, Owen would almost certainly have been long retired. He didn't want to wrestle until his late years, so he could spend time with his family.

Re: Owen Hart wins WWF title
I am not saying Owen was a horrible wrestler by any means, but people ride him because he died.
If you asked some of these same people back then if they thought Owen should be champ, they would probably have said no.

Re: Owen Hart wins WWF title
There were two chances for him to be a transition champion but that's about it.
1. The 1994 feud with Bret. He could have briefly won the title and dropped it back to Bret in a grudge match like the SummerSlam cage match or he could have been used to drop the title to a face like when Backlund briefly won the title from Bret and dropped it to Diesel.
2. The aftermath of the Montreal screwjob. The screwjob story was hot enough and Owen was briefly over enough that he could have briefly taken the title off of HBK but HBK didn't want to put him over according to Cornette.

You are comparing this era to that era? Owen at that point in his career was a better wrestler than 75% of the current roster.
But putting that aside, you are making a shit comparison, because the difference between then and now is that the booking blows

Re: Owen Hart wins WWF title
I never understood why they went with Backlund taking the title and losing to Diesel. The whole thing lacked something that having Owen in the slot, trained by Backlund would have made better. I guess it was the whole "Bret wanting an excuse to job" thing so they had to do the stupid towel stuff. Owen beats Bret at SS, a week later on RAW, Diesel beats Owen in 8 seconds... a (much brighter) star is born.
