Anyway, from the poll I will take Bruno because nobody drew more money than him and he was an icon of his time, not only in the business. Besides, you put names like Mil Mascaras who is a legend in Mexico and not Inoki, Rikidozan and El Santo? Who were even bigger in their countries, including Mexico.

Thesz, George, Superstar, Andre etc and who I mentioned above are all contenders. That's if you do it from the 60s and not go back even more to guys like Frank Gotch and Jim Londos.
Shouldn't I make a list by what I have read in articles?

From what I read,Gorgeous George was a media attraction as a wrestler back then in 1950's.

Andre The Giant was getting half a million dollars per year in 1970's and second most recognised athlete after Ali in in 1970's.

Lou Thez has done more for wrestling than any wrestler MAYBE barring Hulk Hogan

I shouldn't have missed El Santo or Inoki. It didn't strike my mind.

HAHAHHAHAHA!
Owned that Austin316sheep guy

I can bet that he randomly picked up some names that he read other posters post in various threads and made this thread just to pretend he knows a lot about the classic times

I watched Ric when he came to WWE.
But how was I supposed to know he was a legend? He looked like a senile idiot who screamed a lot.

You hate me as much as Pyro hates Jeff Hardy.Don't know why.

How am I supposed to know about wrestlers that wrestled twenty or thirty years before I was born?
I read articles and watch clips.Unlike a 70 year old man like you.

Atleast when I speak about Austin,I show links and facts.
Not unlike you who keep writing essays without any proof

And I don't agree to a guy who says Rock>Hogan

Wow! now looks determine a legacy of a superstar. Going by that, if you started watching WWE today, you would call Daniel Bryan an angry screaming midget

LOL! If you're not supposed to know about them, why do you pretend to know them?
And it is not like anyone stopped you from doing research by watching vids or reading legit text before posting here. And i um 21, but know much more about this business than you

Another lie. I always show proofs and links. However, it is not my fault that you did not read certain biographies / autobiographies which i mention many times. And not my fault that you did not watch the videos / documentaries that i mention as my proofs

Don't agree? It doesnt matter whether you agree or not!

God this is hard. It's like the Rock/Austin thing where you can make a great case foe either. A lot of these guys you're really splitting hairs. Some of it probably depends on what the criteria is too. Gorgeous George was a fabulous entertainer but was rather small, not overly athletic and probably not the greatest in ring wrestler of these guys. He could entertain with the best of them though. I remember hearing stories about tv's being setup in windows of places back in the day and a lot of people would stop in the street and watch when Gorgeous George came on because of how entertaining his antics were in the ring.

Bruno Sammartino was obviously pretty special when you consider that the WWE still tries to get him in the HOF despite all the years of Bruno just ripping McMahon and WWE to shreds.

Not taking away anything from Bruno in that he was a tremendous draw. he was the best draw that the WWE ever had pre Hogan. However, it should be noted that he was mainly a northeastern attraction as opposed to the rest of the NWA territories. I can't remember the year but I do know the WWE broke way from the NWA somewhere in the 1960s. The NWA champion pre 1980s was the premier world title and it would really need to be a NWA titleholder such as Thesz or Race was among others. I would say that Thesz was the greatest wrestler pre Golden Age but others such as Gagne and Hackenscmidt are also great choices.

As I'm a lucha fan, I'll say El Santo. He I had to pick from the list, I'd say either Bruno Sammartino or Killer Kowalski.

Uh hello? The Golden Age was the 1950-60's, so none of these guys.

The answer is Gotch or Hackenschmidt.

History Lesson, just a rough estimate.
1900-1950 Carnival era
1950-mid 1960s Golden era
1960s-1982 Territorial era
1982- Expansion era

If you are talking about in wrestling history pre 1982 then...

Lou Thesz is the only correct answer.

Anyone saying Bruno has a Northeast bias or is too young to actual have a historical perspective.

Fact is Bruno is barely top 20, seriously. I mean I like Bruno, I just understand, as someone alive at that time that he was not a great worker, nor was the WWF considered on the same level as the AWA or NWA at that time. They were still considered a territory for most of Bruno's run.

El Santo, Andre, Rogers, Race, etc... there are so many guys more deserving of that title than Bruno. I am afraid that the WWE revisionist history regime is really taking away any real historical accuracy from the way people born in the 80's or later think of "history".

Verne Gagne was so much "greater" than Bruno it's not even close. The AWA was light years more significant than the WWF title. But unless you grew up then it would be hard for you to know that fact. It's not your fault it is the fault of the WWF's propanganda machine.
