Excellent write up. In Bret's book he expressed doubts about the USA vs Canada feud as everyone would be watching the same show. But Vince managed it perfectly, creating a great deal of sympathy for Hart in Canada and Europe. It wasn't just a feud between two nations but two different ideals. Americans wanted to cheer for rednecks, Europeans wanted old fashioned heroes like Hart. Of course there were exceptions but generally the realism of this feud made it highly intense and compulsive viewing.

I would say Austin's feud with Bret ended in April. He then moved on to Owen Hart. He was sceheduled to face Bret in the UK in Sept before his injury though. I wonder what would have happened in that match. Bottom line was that Austin moved a lot of merchandise despite being marketed as a heel in the UK. Would Bret have been booed? We got the thrilling Taker/Hart match instead.

I am kind of glad Bret didn't drop the belt at WM 14. It would have meant the whole feud amounted to nothing and Bret eventually lost to the arrogant american anti heroes. The Montreal incident ironically tidied things up nicely. Bret got a lot of sympathy from US fans over the way he was screwed. The Canadian fans (who knew Bret was leaving) cheered for Austin as soon as he pinned Owen, despite being booed throughout the match. Vince became a heel, turning Austin into a mega babyface. It seemed like the perfect closing chapter, though tragic for Bret.

Incredible post. The greatest feud of all time, in my opinion. The Stone Cold character was at it's greatest during this feud. Every single segment that Austin and Bret did between Bret's return in 1996 until summer of 1997 was absolutely classic. The two played their roles so damn well, that even looking back now, you have to question whether or not the two genuinely hated each other. That's how damn great the both of them are, and how damn great the matches / feud were.

And yet, I have nothing but sadness still looking back on this. Knowing that the greatness that started at Survivor Series 96, everything that was built up perfectly and executed perfectly would be over pretty quickly. Bret gone just a year later... It still doesn't feel right. Bret - Austin could have been so much bigger once Austin hit the top.

great post and please give this man a Rep. AUstin vs Bret is one of top 5 great Rivalries and top 2 after AUstin vs Mcmahon. this rivalry open the door for Attitude era...i always urge people watch Austin/Bret work in 96-97 before they even start thinking or talking about attitude era.

Bret and Austin simply one of unfinished business and rivalry...Bret still never make Austin tap out or Quit. after Bret put Austin over he already Main Eventer have series of matches with Shawn/Undertaker on Main Event and never look back.

This feud helped WWE at the time and helped both stars even more.

If Bret never went to Wcw they could have had so many more classics

I remember Bret said at Survivor Series 97 he would lose to anyone but Hbk but he did say he would put over Austin

Lets not get into the whole Montreal thing again, but for the record Hart said he would've lost to anyone, including Shawn, but he wanted Shawn to put him over first.

That's because Hbk screwed him out of wm13 by not having a rematch

Nope, that's because of the conversation Bret and Shawn had in the locker room prior a while prior to SS.

But the deal was at wm12 that one year later but Hbk never stuck to the deal
