Default Forgotten Legends29: Kevin Sullivan

Also known as the devil worshiping Task Master from WCW and one of its controversial bookers and the guy who lost his wife to Chris Benoit when Kayfabe became reality, he also had a career that spanned over 27 years with over 32 titles across 13 wrestling organizations pioneering the darkness gimmick much before the Taker and the ministry gimmick through Dungeon of Doom.

Starting out as Johnny West in 1970 becoming the tag champ in NWA and leaving it to join WWWF for three years as a mid carder, he took the devil worshiping heel gimmick in FCW where he met his future wife who was first known as Fallen Angel and later Woman and found maximum success in ICW and FCW in parallel feuding with the likes of Superstar Billy Graham, Austin Idol and Black Jack Mulligan.

He then moved to WCW in 1987 forming the Varsity Club feuding with Steiners, Rhodes, Jimmy Garvin, Eddie Gilbert before forming Slaughterhouse where he made Cactus Jack and Buzz Sawyer also briefly managing Oz (Kevin Nash) as Wizard of Merlin. After having brief runs in SMW and ECW where he had tag title runs he went back to WCW.

It was in SMW where he became known only as the Master in a hooded gimmick controlling a couple wrestlers to feud with the face Brian Lee. It was later revealed after Lee had managed to defeat both that the Master controlling them was none other than Sullivan. The whole angle was reused in Corporate Ministry by McMahon in a much bigger way.

He came back to WCW and had a 7 year run their both as a Booker and a wrestler for which he was most known. He had various feuds, most notably with Hulk Hogan, Savage, Sting before becoming the TaskMaster, someone who took orders from who was only known as The Master and formed the Dungeon of Doom which had a wide variety of talents like Bubba Rogers, Kamala, Barbarian, Meng, Yeti, The Giant, Vader and many more. He helped the Giant win the title from Hogan in 1995. Then after a brief feud with Four Horseman, they two aligned to become The Alliance to end Hulkamania. This was when he came into contact with Benoit who went on to Kayfabe steal his wife which real life soon followed Suit.

Though he personally did not like Benoit, Benoit often credited him for treating his professional life as a booker and personal life separately. He officially retired in a match to Benoit going on to become a full time booker from 1997.

Having a illustrious career across so many organizations pioneering so many angles and gimmicks that were later reused by many like Taker, Raven he truly was a forgotten legend.

Im just going to through this out there before people call him "the reason Benoit and the radicals left wwf". Thats not true. Sullivan had laid out a long program that would have made him champ for awhile, then he was to drop it to Sid.

With that said, Sullivan was a great wrestler, even towards the end of his career. Watching WCW pre NWO, he is a real highlight. He started to fade once the nwo came in although he did steal some shows with Benoit.

Quite true, the Radicalz contracts with WCW were expiring and when Sullivan was head booker once Russo left, they realized that there was not much left in WCW for them and left for the better money. I guess Eddie mentioned Hogan/Bischoff also as a reason and that they had planned their release much earlier in his bio.

Very cool guy, love the stuff he did with the devil worshipper gimmick, really ahead of its time, remember this guy was 5'7 with a strong Boston accent, far from intimidating, but his brawler style and gimmick made him nore believable as a dangerous heel. Fairly ungrateful by Benoit to leave the night after Sullivan put the world title on him because he didnt think Sullivan would have his best interests at heart, Sullivan had to tell 7 foot Sid to tap out to Benoit, even though Sid disagreed but did it out of respect

That match he had with Benoit is a classic. Exactly how a No DQ match should be. That said, it's funny how he's now mostly recognized as "the guy who really killed Benoit".

You gotta understand that Benoit and Sullivan despised each other and Benoit was tired of the backstage politics by that time. To an extent that he hated his job. He thought putting the World Title on him was just a political move to keep him happy and he was not even the only person to be unhappy with his position in the company.

Fantastic gimmick, but I never thought of him as a good in-ring worker. What matches besides that entertaining Benoit match did he have that are worth watching?

I also hated the Alliance to End Hulkamania angle. Made everyone look terrible.

If I remember right, doesn't Sullivan not sell anything during the Benoit no DQ match?

Sullivan in Florida one of the best runs ever. However you forgot his Memphis run with Jimmy Hart classic!
