Re: Forgotten Legends16: Bob Backlund

I'd say he's a forgotten legend for sure, for the simple fact that he's remembered more nowadays as a comedic personality rather than one of the best workers of the 1970's. I've pretty much never seen a Bob Backlund match that sucks.

Backlund/Hansen in Japan is just awesome and so is the Cage Match from MSG in WWWF. Did he ever wrestle Terry Funk?

They're finally putting the classic meeting between Backlund and Hart from Superstars in 1993 on DVD (Top 50 Finishers). The match is around **** and afterwards Backlund snaps and locks on the crossface chicken-wing, leading to their match at Survivor Series. I'm excited to have that on DVD.

Backlund was also the perfect mentor for a green Kurt Angle, I only wish they would have done more together. There is a really fun tag match from SD with Bob/Kurt against Tazz/Jericho, though.

He still works, too. If I was promoting, I'd book him in a heartbeat.

Yeah, he is a forgotten legend though, so kudos for the thread. I would have thought you'd at least spell his name right in a dedicated thread to him.
No, it's Bob Backlund, 'you ignorant fuckwit'. B-A-C-K-L-U-N-D! Eat your words. EAT THEM!

I loved the guy, particularly in 1994 when he went fucking mental and started flipping out all the time. Funny as fuck, but also scary.

Haha, I'm literally cringing at my ineptitude to rip on someone succesfully. I should be shamed.

Re: Forgotten Legends16: Bob Backlund

Bob Backlund was a very good in ring worker but lacked charisma and the look that Vince McMahon Jr wanted from his top guys as he wanted to take wrestling from what it was and turn it into an entertainment style programme. People like Hulk Hogan, The Iron Sheik, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Bobby Heenan, Lou Albano and Adrian Adonis and many others who were big stars back then were all larger than life personalities who brought entertainment to wrestling rather than solid in ring work.

Bruno Sammartino was another who struggled once Vince McMahon Jr took over as he was another person who was a traditionalist when it came to wrestling and still to this day slates Vince McMahon for where wrestling is now. Unfortunately for people like Bob Backlund wrestling evolved from what it was when people like himself and Bruno Sammartino were around and having multi year WWE title reigns and once Vince McMahon Jr took over they were the type of wrestlers that would have fitted in better in NWA/JCP because whilst they still had storylines they were more about in ring work than larger than life, cartoonish characters.

Re: Forgotten Legends16: Bob Backlund

I wouldn't say he's forgotten. But he is a true legend and the HOF is worthless without the likes of him in there.
