Why Shane Douglas?

I was just watching the new ECW Unreleased DVD, and I have to wonder: Why was Shane Douglas picked to be the first ECW HW chapion? Everything about the guy reaks of bland, and mediocrity. Not to mention, his match with Too Cold Scorpio anti-clamatic to say the least. Out of all the talent they had on roster at the time, was he truly the best choice? I'm interested in what you guys think about this.

Re: Why Shane Douglas?

I'm really not 100% sure im right here, but i think it was because he was the nwa champion at the time, and they wanted him to throw down the title. Think it had something to do with them breaking away from the nwa.

Re: Why Shane Douglas?

Well he won the title by beating Too Cold Scorpio. It was the finals of a tournament. Still seems like a strange choice to me.

Re: Why Shane Douglas?

I guess it's because Douglas was the top star at that time and was a 2 time ECW Champion. ECW was treating Douglas as a big deal as far back as late 1993.

Also, ECW's roster wasn't that strong when ECW first began pushing him. But thru his promos, he showed ECW he was a star, despite how he was used elsewhere.

Re: Why Shane Douglas?

My guess is that Douglas was the nearest they had to the total package. He could work, he could talk and he was reasonably young too.

Re: Why Shane Douglas?

I guess I'm just not seeing it. I don't think he could work, and I don't think his mic skills were all that great. I hate to sound critical, but the guy just reeked of mediocrity.

Re: Why Shane Douglas?

I always thought he was a brilliant heel. Could have really been something in WWF. His matches with Taz in ECW were great.

I've been in the Danger Zone! He's got a Bicycle! Minus! Five! Stars! FAT ASSES! Mongo! Huh? Yappapi! WE COMING FOR YOU .....! Super Dragon! (CZW Airhorn) Oh shi- Jeff Harvey. How Much Does This Guy Weigh? Hahaha! Play! Wanna Play 21? FAKKEN!

That’s what I thought. He was the eastern championship wrestling champion at the time but won a tournament for the NWA title but after he won he threw throw down the NWA title and said he did not want to be champion of a “dead” company. He also then stated that the Eastern Championship Wrestling title at the time was now a world championship which of course went on to be come the Extreme Championship title.

However I agree for the most part with the OP. I too found Douglass to be rather bland most of the time.
