Actually, the way Vince did it probably worked out best for them from a business standpoint. He waited until the company went totally bankrupt and then acquired its assets (the video tape collection and trademark) for dirt cheap. This way he picked up all the top talent and the brand without having to pay back the horrendous debt Heyman and co. had accumulated.

Vince had two options to either keep WCW and ECW running owning the competition or buy them out and take their stars. I don't think he made the right decision to be honest as he could have made one hell of a roster at the WWF while putting the WCW and ECW together to make a mixture of both rosters, up and coming stars and WWF wrestlers that seeked change. Sting didn't join the WWF even after WCW were bought out; asking the question how many other wrestlers would have stayed with their existing company instead of risking the WWF.

The choice he made was risk-free, as fans could watch brand v brand to see the talent coming together. It was brilliant at the time but it was only a short-term measure IMO. If fans didn't like it they'd have no competition to turn to, but many careers were either ruined or cut short.
