Re: WWE.com Remembering the WCW/ECW Invasion
...and yet the whole thing was butchered because Vince saw fit to make it all about his god damn family instead. *clap*

vince could of bought out there contracts, with the money he would of made off this great angle if booked right it would of been worth it
even if he bought out 2 or 3 big names, and waited till 02 for the others they could of booked it the right way
The argument of; Vince could have bought out Goldberg's contract and he would have easily made the money back on PPV's is a bit easy. We are just assuming that that was even a possibility, plus we don't know how hefty the buyout fee would have been. Also, waiting until 2002 or even later would have killed momentum. They bought WCW, so they needed to invade quickly after, not a year after.
I wrote about the Survivor Series 2001 Main Event yesterday at http://www.wrestlingmatchHOF.co.uk as I do believe that although the match itself was superb, the whole Invasion was a major flop. The invasion as a whole should have shaped the wrestling industry to a point where it was going to be a major success for years to come!
Obviously they should have signed all the top WCW names for the invasion angle, and I also think they should have held it off until the beginning of 2002. Then they could do the invasion angle on the build up to WrestleMania 18. The climax would be a WCW vs WWF card at WrestleMania.
Dream matches all over the card
The Rock vs Hollywood Hogan
Austin vs Goldberg
Undertaker vs Sting
etc...

Yes, one of the biggest displays of Vince McMahon's ego I've ever seen.
The entire angle was doomed for the start as Vince would never let the Alliance "get one over" on the WWF. Sure, they had a few wins here and there but he moved his TOP GUY to the Alliance just so a WCW/ECW guy wouldn't look better than one of his own.
That combined with the bigger WCW guys not signing with the WWF just hurt the entire angle.
I remember an interview Sting did once on why he didn't sign with the WWF at that time. He said he saw The Rock use his "who in the blue hell are you" line on Booker T. He didn't trust how he'd be used and rightfully so.
We all know Vince doesn't allow guys that aren't created by the WWE machine go too far in his company. The only reason Punk has gotten as far as he has is because they were short on talent. Hardy, Batista, HBK, Triple H, Undertaker, and Edge were all gone and Punk was that outstanding talent they had to utilize.
The Invasion will always have a special place in my heart since I was a younger fan back then but I had a good time bashing it just as much as I liked a few things about it. Some were Austin being the focal point, RVD getting a big push [since I was marks for both of them], and then you did have some solid matches thrown in throughout from the entire roster.
Overall, it wasn't good but it was certainly a very interesting time to be a wrestling fan. That I am sure no one would deny.
