Default Will we ever see a USA vs the outsider fued again? why, or why not?

For years guys like Von Rashcke, Yammamoto, Koloff and the Shiek terrorized the American wrestling rings.

Hundreds of guys made their living playing this heel role.

Slaughter vs Sheik is one of my favorite wrestling fueds ever...I miss those fueds....the good ones at least.

Do you think those days are over? Why, why not?

I think America is too sensitive for anything like that, which is a shame because it's only for entertainment.

Like, people got all butt hurt about Muhammad Hassan but your average movie/TV show back then would make light of the whole terrorist situation.

I doubt we'll get anything like that again.

No because it is too simplistic. I think the current generation of "marks" are much more clever and cynical than back in the 80's. They would not go for blind patriotism or cliched foreign heels. The Hart Foundation angle was great because it was more realistic and more about "anti heroes vs tradtional role models" than a simple "USA is best" mentality. Look at The Patriot. Even the American fans booed him because he was pretty much a sterotype of the in your face americanism that was popular in the 80's.

They won't exploit war the way they did in 1991 due to their associated to the National Guard and such like.

Foreign wrestlers have been babyfaces (not exclusively) since at least the late 80s, and I think there's just a "racism" thought on a wrestler who's brought in from a specific country like Japan and automatically made the barefoot salt-throwing heel. I mean I LOVE those types of wrestlers if done properly, and the Slaughter/Sheik feud was amazing with the boot camp match being honestly a contender for the greatest match the WWE ever had. Still, WWE's a worldwide company and they might feel they would alienate some of their audience if they brought in an Arabian guy and had someone chant 'USA' in their face. Look at (e.g.) Tojo Yamamoto; he worked in Memphis and their stuff wasn't broadcast around the world like WWE is now. I mean he was born in Hawaii so technically not a foreign wrestler but he still had that gimmick and stuff.

Very interesting, all these years of watching wrestling and I never really thought about the racism angle. I mean we focused for decades on the plight of the African American wrestler. That type of racism was rampant from Sputnik Monroe/ Norvell Austin to Bobo Brazil. It was horrible. However, I never previously considered it racism when guys like Yammamoto, Volkoff, and Von Rashcke wrestled. I mean is it racism if those guys were North Americans playing the role of a foreign invader? Never thought of that maybe it was. Those guys wanted that heat, they wanted to generate the USA chants. It was just such a different era....heck we had guys pretending to be Native Americans like Strongbow and Adnan El Keissey.

So what is the difference between Patriotism and Racism? That is an interesting question. And in the "theatrical" world of wrestling was it racism or just one people wanting their countries champion to beat the outsider? I am simply asking the question. I guess if the portrayed a sterotype like being a sneaky heel like most of the Japanesse wrestlers were it would be, because you are feeding on a negative stereotype, but a wrestler like Iron Sheik is spitting at the crowd and saying "USA ahhh phooey" (I always thought that was hilarious)and he's just playing the my country is better than yours card. Good points made by all thanks.

I don't remember the Patriot getting booed for being over the top American. I do remember him being pushed way too fast. I am pretty certain that was the mian reason he did not get a huge reception. By the time he started to get over they pulled the plug. Why, because (and this was on one of the WWE rountable shows) was because Vince panicked that he pushed the Patriot to fast and Wilkes got injured. Heck that was an era where Duggan incited USA chants all over, and Canada sucks chants vibrated off the walls at arenas just like anti US chants flowed throughout Canada. I always thought that was a strange angle, but to say it was not a US vs Canada fued like another poster said well I disagree, just go back and watch those crowds and the American/Canadian flags everywhere.

Sadly, I think you are 100% spot on, especially your first point. It was meant for entertainment.

Last one to do it was Muhammad Hassan in 2005. And he was quite succsessful. They should've make him feud with someone, instead of randomly throwing him into matches with various Americans.

In Lucha Libre USA they are doing (or were doing) an angle, where RJ Brewer, a heel American, wasnt to destroy all the luchadors from Mexico. Only in this case, American is heel.
