Rob Van Dam-ECW World Champion?

Rob Van Dam put on some of the greatest matches in ECW's history against the likes of Jerry Lynn, Sabu, Rhino and Taz. He was a fantastic Television and Tag champion and was very over with the crowd. But something always irked me about his ECW run. Despite his popularity, he was never ECW World Champion. Why? If ECW hadn't had folded in 2001 and RVD stayed with the company, would he have had been ECW WHC eventually? I mean, look how over this man was. Insane props from the crowd. Rob Van Dam was a true showman. He wasn't called Mr. Pay Per View for nothing. He put asses in seats.

I have always heard that had he not been injured during that record breaking ECW TV title run the plan was for him to take the World title from Mike Awesome which was going to be built as the biggest match in ECW history. There is no doubt that Paul Heyman was going to put the World title on Rob Van Dam as he was being groomed to be their top star as Taz was going or had already gone to WWE whilst Mike Awesome was going to WCW. Outside of Rob Van Dam there wasn't really anyone else as most people had gone to WWE or ECW with Tommy Dreamer, Jerry Lynn, New Jack, Justin Credible and The Sandman being the only others really around who could have been on top but none who were as over back then.

It is a mystery but it doesn't really matter, he made the Television title just as, if not even more prestigious than the World Title.

Shame he only ever got a shitty reign from WWE, was so much better than that. Triple H needs to go and fuck himself for having RVD's push stopped.

Obviously he should have dropped the TV Title to Lynn at Heatwave '99 and defeated Taz for the World Title at Anarchy Rulz. But Paul never wanted to take the obvious route, which ended up being his downfall as a writer.

ECW was slightly different Championship-wise than most promotions, whereas in other promotions you have your top title and then the other titles slowly drop through the ranks, in ECW you had fewer titles and so just to hold one was a big deal. To me there was no clear main title in ECW, you had your Tag belts and then the two singles belts both of which tended to be the main focus of the shows. If you look at the list of names that held the TV Title, it's arguably the more prestigious of the two titles when it comes to name value and influential holders so when you consider how long Van Dam held it for as well some of the matches and rivalries he had during that time, its more than comparable to a World Title run.

I think as the years go on you will find this question popping up more and more as people just read the name of the title and presume it was the second tier belt in ECW rather than a really big deal during one of the strongest periods in Professional Wrestling. Just reading through some of the holders is like the who's who of Professional Wrestling, Jimmy Snuka, Terry Funk, Sabu, Taz, Mikey Whipwreck, Scorpio, Dean Malenko, Eddy Guerrero, Shane Douglas, Chris Jericho, Bam Bam Bigelow and Rhino are all former holders, most of which held it at a time when they were considered among the best in the world, it reads like a hall of fame. Whether or not Van Dam was ever meant to hold the Heavyweight Title is neither here nor there for me, this was his World Title run and it is still considered to this day one of the best that company ever had.

He was spot monkey. Nothing more.

Could never be trusted, same with jeff hard but hardy drew insanely well unlike this pothead. This POS never deserved any kinda push.

Yeah, because a 23 month TV title reign (often simultaneously holding the Tag titles) doesn't show that the promotion trusted him. Not to mention, compared to the rest of the ECW locker room, trusting in the pothead was probably the safest bet. Van Dam was absolutely deserving of the push. Biggest draw in ECW history, no doubt.

I thought it was pretty much a lock that he was going to beat Awesome for the belt but ended up breaking his ankle. But, Van Dam never really needed the World Title. He was the most over guy in the company and actually increased the value of the TV Title. And to be honest, I don't recall RVD ever getting a shot at the ECW World Title. He was to that title what Cena is to the WWE Title, he didn't really need it.

Also, LOL @ RVD not being trusted. When has he ever no-showed? If anything, you got it backwards. You could trust the wrestlers in ECW, even Sandman because they always showed up. But, you couldn't trust the guy running the company, as he told lie after life and still owes many of the performers. Van Dam, along with Dreamer, where the most loyal to the company because they didn't leave until the end. Everybody else had stints elsewhere before coming back or only joined ECW in the dying days.

He definitely helped give the TV Title the same prestige/credibility that the World Title had at the same time. I asked many IWC'ers which belt they felt was more important in ECW the World or TV title? The majority still went with the World Title, but I don't know if I entirely agree. I think they are pretty much on the same level of importance almost.

The guy fucked up when he was finally given the ball in 2006 and was released.

What more proof do you want? He is piece of shit who never deserved any push.
